I have a G6. I would like to try to shoot some infrared shots without formating my camera jus tto take them. Is there a certian filter that I need to get or something? I can't convert my pictures into Infrared because i don't have CS2, I only have Elements which doesn't have the Channel Mixer. Can anyone help me out?

I have not done it myself, but I have read about it and the Hoya RM72 is the one that I have read about the most.

I thought digital cameras had a filter inside the camera that block IR light... I could be wrong, but I'd check that out before you spend that much on a filter. If you haven't read Don's sticky thread about IR, read that:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=40366

probably most G-series IR questions are answered there, and those that aren't might be better off tagged onto that thread to help future generations...

They all pretty much do, unless they're specially designed for infrared, like the Canon 20Da, or they have a flip-out-of-the-way filter. But the strength of the filters varies a lot. The G1 is quite good but the G2 is awful (in my opinion). The G6 is probably the best of the lot after the G1. The R72 is the filter you want.

Good suggestion, so I'll grab this response and put it over there. Thanks a lot.

The R72 is the one... and the G6 takes pretty decent photos as long as you have a tripod and not too much wind in the foliage (like none).

The Channel Mixer is not what converts photos to infrared -- that technique is used on photos taken with near-infrared filters, i.e. filters that let a little visible light to come through so that there is some color in your infrared photo. True infrared photos, taken with a 093 filter, for example, are black-and-white and channel swapping doesn't work.

Once you have your near-infrared image, you can use the Channel Mixer to swap the Red and Blue channels. Personally I'm not a fan but plenty of people are.

Good luck. With a little patience, you should enjoy the investment. I guess you know you'll need a filter adapter such as Lensmate, yes?

I've taken some pretty interesting IR landscapes with my G6 and Hoya R72. It does have enough sensitivity, as long as you're using a tripod and exposures of at least 1 second, depending on how bright the day is. I shoot with hyperfocal settings and exposure bracketing around a baseline setting of -1/3 EV. Take a look at the Lensmate home page, and notice that the picture at the bottom is an IR image, and a very nice one, too.

Just by coincidence, I tried some IR with my S2 this morning, and it seems quite a bit more sensitive, but exposures are still in the 1 second range, and of course the S2's wimpy sensor is much more noise prone (Noise Ninja is a necessity). If you've got Photoshop CS2, I've got an action saved that will do all the post processing in a single click. I'd be happy to email it.

You would need adapter and infrared filter - the best is to order a lensmate adapter and Hoya R72 infrared filter from http://lensmateonline.com/buy.html (external link) (you may use this adapter permanently on your G6 with one UV filter for lens protection). You should also use a stable tripod and G6 remote control.
Regarding Red-Blue channel swapping (it could make the infrared photo more interesting) - you may use Irfanview (freeware from www.irfanview.com (external link)) for swapping the Red-Blue channel.
Check my receipt for G6 IR shooting:

and one example:

Hi,
I've taken a number of shots in IR using the hoya R72. Definately you will need a tripod. As well, i found that the "brighter" looking shots converted much better. I would absolutely suggest shooting in RAW mode and then coverting it if you are shooting colour IR. Otherwise you'll have screaming orange photos. bleck. Here's one - sorry all I have to show you thats online is from the place where i sell some (totallyphotos.com):

I do a few few black&white here though:

I just prefer B&W.

I've been quite happy with my IR and G6. only thing: use a tripod, pick "bright and fairly still days" and count on a long exposure. The b&w and even the colour I had printed out - even though the color looks odd - at 8x10 print it still goes: Wow!

Zero, I have a question for you. I was looking at some of your IR shots and i thought they were pretty cool. when you shoot in B&W, do you switch the camera mode to B&W, or does it just come out like that?

Well. ::cough:: :o
the ones you see were shot in B&W in camera. I might not do it that way now, since when i shot most of those you see, it was in the spring and I had no idea of what RAW was. I do notice you have to adjust the contrast though... other than that the b&w are pretty much as you see. I shot some at different exposures - ie: 1sec/1.5/2/2.5seconds for most of the ones you saw there. Manual of course.
