Here's a few shots from this past moist weekend in the redwoods. It was a reminder to check details. Like there were 10 shots in a row where I forgot to check the lens for water drops or spots. Those 10 were all in one spot, so no big deal. But I need to remember to check everything.

The 1st pic became finalist for 2011 Save the Redwood Photo Contest.

Also discovered a new world's tallest hemlock tree. For the present anyway. The name is Tsunami after the wave that hit the redwood coast there.

Thanks for the replies.

If anyone would like to chime-in some feedback on the two photos below, I'd be interested to hear.

It was an experiment to see what it's like to take photos in the redwoods in the dark, with a lantern. I went into a couple of groves about 4am in the morning. For a few photos, I tried aiming a flash upward or to the side. For others, I just used the lantern alone. Maybe it's not even a good idea, since the redwoods are so incredible in daylight. But the thought came to mind to give this a try.

For something like this, what do you think, just the lantern, or the lantern and a little bit of strobe?

Great shots of a very hard subject to truly capture. I don't think there is any way to capture how it feels to actually be in the presence of these wonderful gifts of nature.

One thing that I try to avoid is to not have a person standing in front of the tree. Something about it reduces the tree somehow. In the second shot, I would have ask the guy on the right to move on back to the mid-point if that was possible. Try it both ways next, to see if you agree.

Congrats on a monumental find.

Just ordered 1 print last night of that as 11 x 14. It should look good at 20 x 30 too. One of my favorite photos from winter.

Bump!

Turns out that the redwood photo in my OP, became my first print to sell ... a 20 x 30.

And it was also chosen as a finalist for the Save the Redwoods League 2011 Photo Contest. Voting begins July 21, 2011 for a few weeks at ...

Interesting the ways that photos can make the rounds.

Spectacular series. Congratulations on your photo being selected finalist in the contest. KUDOS all around.

Have plenty of Canons, enough ammo, enough to blow 'em to "L". Now, I just have to learn to aim.
