great shots, i'd forgotten how big they are

Here is one more from Prairie Creek redwoods. Not so much an artsy photo, but meaty anyway.

I just step to the side and stand out of it's way.

;)

Now this one is the widest coast redwood trunk I have found.

In Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.

I hope to get a nice vertical shot of the tree this year. Probably autumn after rain returns and darkens the needles on the ground.

Now here's one that may not get picked for next year's photo contest.

For your amusement ... a giant redwood with an unusual growth dangling. It's also got a cool burl higher up that sort of looks like a Lion's face.

Wow amazing!

Thanks.

As entering or flying over the Columbia River Gorge has a remarkable feeling to it, so do the coast redwoods.

There's even a time I prefer getting there. I try to time some arrivals to be coming west on Highway 199 into Gasquet and Hiouch, CA, about 1 hour before dark when the fog thickens around the tree tops.

Just a few weeks from my next visit.

Just got a new device for measuring, shown below. Tough choice, because it was either the laser rangefinder for 3k, or a Canon 5D Mk ii.

Hope the topic inspires a few people to take a trip in 2012 to these coast redwood forests.

The grove photo is Stout Grove, in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.

When visiting the coast redwood parks in the far north part of California, this historic Carson Mansion in Eureka is worth a look. 1 minute from highway 101.
