Anyone else laugh when they saw this guy (who took the photos) reply? Pretty awesome. Welcome to POTN! You seem like you'll blend in just fine :)

I'm curious as to how he found out I copied and pasted links from his flickr, and tracked them down here on PONT, lol But hey, whatever - anlenke, your work is great!

You seem to focus on self portraits a lot, huh?

Well, I'd nose it in just slightly past the entrance of the dish's back, and leave the zoom probably pretty wide, with my dish that seems to give me the most even spread, but each dish is different. It's great yours is adjustable, I'd spend 30 minutes trying different configurations (even without a person, you could simply use a wall) and see which results you like best!

if you set the zoom wide, wouldn't there be spill over out past the circle?
i would think setting it more narrow would ensure all the light is bounced off the circle back toward the dish.

but i'm a total noob to lighting so what do i know....

Thanks man, yeah, I suppose it is laughable haha. With a pro account on flickr, the site gives you tracking analytics on click throughs, and there were a lot from this site...when I saw your question, just thought it'd be helpful to hear from the horse's mouth.

I do a lot of self-portraits; that's basically what I use that flickr account for. It's not a large majority of my work, but it's easiest for me to use myself for experimenting with new types of lighting/setups etc etc, because I know my face well and it's easiest to see what the different setups' effects are for me. I consider it practice, but I'm pretty new to photography and have taken the approach of mastering lighting first before doing events, etc...

If you set the zoom wide and have the flash close enough, I think you'd be just fine...if you zoom the flash, you may lose a lot of light coming back towards the flash/out the back of the dish...With my SB-900, I've used 35mm and it's been just fine :)

Completely naive here, so pardon the question:

If you were to use a Sto-Fen type omni-bounce attachment on your speedlight, would that hurt or help light distribution? YES - I know the speedlight output would be less overall, but if you aren't dealing with blocking out the sun it may not be that hard to work around.

The quick answer, from my opinion, would be yes, a sto-fen could help, but the limiting of the flash power, the limiting of the placement of the flash by putting a 2" nose on it, and the amount that it would actually help is far outweighed by the potential benefit. You're using the beauty dish modifier to be the light source...sto-fenning the speedlite isn't really going to be significant. I'd skip it.

Sorry man :)

I'm planning a roadtrip to do some collaborative photography in the fall, time permitting, that's centered around a photo job I'm doing in NYC, maybe we could meet up in September if you're around and shoot a little...

Thanks all for the welcome!

If you have a flickr pro account, you get access to your statistics, which include referrers, so you can see where traffic comes from. It's pretty interesting, and at times, very amusing to see how people land on your photos.

I just got the 200 image warning. I was contemplating upgrading to pro or starting another account. This little bit of information just persuaded me to upgrade to pro - Thanks!
