I bought the 22" High Output Beauty Dish from Paul C Buff (Alien Bees/White Lighting). They don't make them anymore, which is unfortunate, they just make a silver one. Every once in a while they pop up on ebay or CL... Mine was about $100.

22" will still give you dramatic lighting. It will still have fall off. If you're primarily going to do full body images, it may be more along the lines of what you're looking for. Don't do this to yourself though...you already ordered the 16" right? Try it out :)

...if you really don't think you like the fall off, and want a little softer light source, then the 22" would be a great choice. If you want to have both and you can afford it, by all means ;)

BD's can also make a pretty good hairlight, so you could use it as that if you don't want to return one, etc...

oh yeah, and just so were on the same page, when you say if I don't like the 16 and want softer, to go with the 22 - are you stating going with a 22 silver? or 22 white?

because i had this one in mind for the 22 (silver):

Nice, glad you got the grid.

There are a couple of different ways to make it soft. All else being equal, a 22" dish will be softer than a 16" dish, because the bigger the light source (modifier in this instance), the softer the light.
The other factor is the interior of the dish. The white will be the softest, as silver is more reflective and in that way, a little brighter/harder light.

In my experience, in order of hardest to softest light, (distance to subject being equal) looks like this:
16" silver BD with grid
22" silver BD with grid
16" silver BD bare
22" silver BD bare
22" white BD grid
16" silver with sock
22" silver with sock
22" white Bd bare
22" white with sock

The point being, for me, the difference between a gridded dish and non-gridded dish is much more of a difference than 16" to 22" or silver versus white.

gotcha, nice breakdown.

alright man, i'm going to leave you the heck alone now, lol... and test/play around with my BD when it comes in. i just know i'm overthinking all this, and as soon as I spend soe hours with it, then i'll catch on pretty quick.

thanks again for all the info, and thanks for the comments on my flickr. you said more then the typical 'nice shot' comments, lol... i appreciate that!

Absolutely, happy to have been able to help. When you get it, pop it on a lightstand, and simply angle it down a little bit, then try taking images of a flat wall and adjust the flash zoom/head placement to see the effects. If you want to try it on a person, you could always use...yourself ;)

Enjoy man! Excited to see the images you create :)
