Hi there,

I'm hoping a kind soul will help me with what I'm looking for. I'm building a website and I've realised that stacking 67 photos one on top of each other makes it hard to view and not very practical.

The way I imagine it is to have a 800x600 box - "current photo the user is viewing", maybe with a few lines of text on the side, and "previous" and "next" buttons on it for navigation through the collection.

As I'm planning to upload 100 photos or so per category, I also wish to have decent-sized thumbnails underneath for direct access in order to avoid pressing "next" 99 times to get to photo 99.

Maybe someone can tell me what such a thing is called? And where to get it? Or maybe bits of HTML code I can paste? Please bear in mind I'm no HTML genius.

Thank you for taking the time

I'm no Web designer, it's been years since I've touched HTML, but googling "web gallery software" produced some interesting hits:

Going for some well-designed template would, IMO, be much more hazard-free than trying to piece something together myself!

If you have Dreamweaver, Lightbox / Thickbox -> there is a free add-on for that, although it does rely on a display of all images which will give you whatever you link in a frame when you click it (e.g. a larger version)

-> I think your best bet is really googling, and if you have an Editor like Dreamweaver search through the (free) add-ins.

Whatever you use, it will most likely need CSS -> and possibly some JavaScript.

Edit -> this is a lightbox:

I have seen a gallery template something like this. The pics are stacked on top in a pile. and as you hit next, the top one flys off and goes to the bottom..etc..etc... Ill have to look for it.....

But a few thoughts...100 pictures? Most viewers will not stay long enough to go throught em all. Not with out a way to skip through the pile in some way. And load time will be the death of the site. It will be minutes till all of them are loaded. By then they have moved on to another site.

Sometimes pages with THUMBNAIL images are better (inserted into a table" format works for me!)as they display quickly and quite a few can be displayed per page and they load very quickly. Links to larger images is an easy thing to do per thumbnail.

Thank you for your answers.

I have omitted to say my photos are hosted with google (picasa) and I wish to keep them there in order to avoid re-uploads and hosting costs.

I think I need a java app of some sort.. I have googled extensively - maybe there's something I don't understand: they all seem to be standalone thingies, and they don't seem to offer the possibility to integrate it into a web page.

100s of pictures - yes.. they are ment for astrophoto enthusiats / railroad freaks.. we're talking serious geeks here, so usual standrads may not apply :)

100 thumbnais is reasonable I guess... page loading time should not suffer *too* much..?

L.

-> Java -> Bad, means you need to have Java Installed and not block it.

Or do you mean JavaScript (still blocked by some, but not by most)
If you use that Google stuff, as long as you have a direct link to the image a thumbnail and thickbox would work.

This is how I do it. Simple links and hyperlinks in a "table". Problem is that people that are new to the site don't know that each image is a thumbnail and is linked to a larher image! LOL!! I get in a hurry and forget to type that when I make the pages. Nothing fancy as I do not have any intentions of "selling" the images merely displaying them.
