Whats the deal with Elinchrom products? I picked up the BXRI kit (love it) and want to get a 250 watt light and a soft box, but B&H and Adorama are out of stock. Is Elinchrom just that popular?

They have had some stocking issues. Not sure if it's Elinchrom or Manfrotto Distribution. I've been trying to source an Avenger A4039CS for like weeks now, purchased it over a month ago from B&H. They finally called and said it was going to be awhile. So i just picked up another A4050CS instead.

When I spoke to Mark Astmann a few weeks ago he said he's having a very difficult time getting product from Elinchrom. Of course, he attributed the shortages to the booming popularity of Elinchrom.

Quality stuff at a good price point will sell quickly. I've been looking for a 39" deep octa for awhile as well. Think I saw maybe late spring?

Supply and demand. High demand, low supply. Why? Who knows. Both Elinchrom and their distributors must be well aware of the growing popularity and demand for the gear. You would think they would step up production and increase supply.

I ordered two cables from B&H which is listed as "3-7 days" as opposed to "in stock". This was last Feb. 2. At the end of Feb, when I inquired about the status of the order, I was told it'd come in middle of March. When I called the other day, I was told it would come in some time in April. So I cancelled the order and ordered the cable from Adorama. Now, I know this is not a highly in-demand product so how does one explain that? Definitely not a high demand, low supply situation. It seems like their shipments from Elinchrom come in once a month. Are they using slow steam ships to ferry them across the Atlantic Ocean, I wonder?

What's really ironic is that I had initially ordered the cable from Adorama because they showed that it was in stock. I ordered two cables and then saw that it hadn't ship the next day. When I called about it, they only had one cable and had to wait for the other one to come in. So I cancelled that order and ordered two from B&H knowing that I'd have what I thought was a 3 to 7 day wait. After two weeks, when the order hadn't shipped yet, I revised the order to one cable instead of two and ordered the other cable from Adorama which they still had in stock. Yesterday, I cancelled the B&H order and ordered the 2nd cable from Adorama who had since gotten another cable in stock. In retrospect, I should have just kept my original order with Adorama and just waited. I would have gotten both cables a lot sooner. :|

Are you talking about the modeling lamps? You might be able to get one from hardware stores.

There are a lot of things that go into a supply chain model. Getting everything right and then making changes to adapt to demand is a Herculean task. World economic conditions and the current problems in Japan don't help.

If Elinchrom owns its manufacturing facilities, not likely, then adding capability requires substantial capital. If they use contract manufacturing, more likely, then they have to negotiate additional capacity, which may not be available. Or at least not immediately. And then there all the components.

Remember when Brendan (aka Mumbles aka Symbolphoto) ordered the Hensel standard reflector for his Elinchrom ring flash? Didn't that result in a 10 week wait? If Elinchrom is using steam ships, Hensel must be using Algonquin war canoes.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. Turns out it was a mix of B&H not placing the order in time and them bypassing the USA distributor to cut costs. So it lies more within B&H's role than Hensel's.

That being said, there were issue now with Avenger. The A4039CS shows out of stock, but ships from distributor in 7-14 business days. After 21 business days, i called and asked what was up. B&H dude i know asks the chain what is going on? Get my answer in a few hours.

Manfrotto Distribution doesn't have it in stock. Looking at Mid-April at best. I said screw it, you have the A4050CS in stock , i'll just take another. And it was dealt with. I'm not sure why suppliers aren't supplying. Rather odd, really.

Last i checked these companies were in the business of making money. So i wonder if it's something else going on that us regular consumers just don't know about.

Some Avenger items that aren't regularly stocked can take quite a bit longer than the specified 7-14 days.

Yeah, i mean i understand if it's something obscure. But the A4039CS or A4050CS should be regular stock, me thinks.

Sadly, that's not the case. :(

Huh, well good for them! Hopefully more and more people are learning about their great product quality!
