This isn't the first thread I've seen on this subject. It seems that Japan is not only facing a whole host of problems stemming from a natural disaster but their recovery will be hampered by reduced demand for their products due to ignorant and irrational fears about radioactivity.

I post this thread only after a long hard consideration.

Well, I don't have the Knowledge, and I don't think that is unreasonable question.

Incoming planes from the far east flying into California today set off radioactivity detectors.

Don't worry, even if somehow the gear had been sitting a mile away from the reactor this whole entire time, it would be completely harmless to you. I'd go further and say that in this case if you say, found a camera sitting 100 feet away from the reactor in question, cleaned it off (got rid of any dust, etc, from the area) then sent it to the U.S. it would be harmless to you.

What I'm more curious about is whether or not exposure to radiation could damage the electronics. I know the electronics in the space shuttle have to be fortified to endure the exposure they receive in space but I'm not clear on if that is permanent damage or just temporary signal disruption type of stuff.

the electronics wouldnt carry enough residual radiation from the site unless if it has a few milligrams of the actual radioactive material collected around it, which would probably already too close to the reactors, and will be damaged enough to not even be working because of the earthquake damage.

The way I understand it, space certified electronics can withstand much much more than consumer based chips and electronics. Even still they too can be affected which usually results in faults and resets and progresses to full destruction from there based on the exposure.

I'd imagine if a camera was dosed pretty well, it would at least show pretty spotty performance and weird shutdowns or hangs.

Put a 50mm f1.2 on a Canon 5D mk II and do a long exposure of the photo gear in a dark room. If it glows, call Canon.

Japanese government told their residents within 30kms zone to get out; the rest of world told their visitors to get out within 80kms zone. Why ?

Might seem a bit over cautious now, rather than find out in the hard way.

Suppose that things did escalate and the Japanese government needed to expand the evacuation zone out to 50 or 60km immediately. That is not a good time to have a language barrier preventing people from understanding the directions coming out of the government. There's also the fact that people from other countries need a head start because they have a lot farther to travel to get to the nearest relative with a spare bedroom.

I'm ashamed at the pure FUD being shown here. I hang my head in total shame and hope that if anyone from Japan is reading this, can see these types of questions as the exception and not the rule. Some people see a few Maya generated animations, hear a couple of expert opinions, read a couple of blog post and they think of themselves as honorary IAEA members.

To answer the question. if there is enough FUD-raking, I'm sure Japan will return to something akin to the gold stickers they once added to camera gear when there was question about their workmanship. I hope to never see this, because it will mean the FUD-rakers would have won.
