I was thumbing through a UK magazine the other day and spotted a company in the UK. Their name is 3 Legged Thing (external link). I have no experience with them but they look very similar to the Korean tripods. They had a tripod on their "specials" page where you wouldn't have to pay VAT.

They look nice! (external link) I'll go check them out a little bit more and see if I can find the VAT free one (I don't see a 'specials' page on their site though!).

This one looks good! (external link) It supports up to 12kg, wow! I don't think it has a lateral arm though. I'll go google if I can find stuff about it!

Very cool! But with the dollar where it is they look expensive. They say that they are working on a Seattle distributor - I'm anxious to hear more about their products.

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

Hmm! Very interesting indeed!I would pick this up in a second (external link), I have read only one review about it though (which says it's good), but I'd like to see some more reviews/maybe a hands-on video or anything. The makers of the brand should really make those, because they look really awesome!

EDIT: The more I check that stuff out the more I want to try it out. I think I would prefer the 'Kirk' over the 'ePod' though, looks more sturdy. The b3s ballhead also looks really nice. Of course I'd have to try it first.

Mr TijmenDal

I have the Vanguard Alta Pro and reviewed it here

https://photography-on-the.net …=Vanguard+alta+pro+263+at

The tripod is fine and very easy to use. It comes with a ballast bag and carry case. I wouldn't get a Vanguard pan n tilt head though because of the way the lever opens. It's explained in my review. You could partner the legs with a Giottos head. I have both a Giottos ball and pan n tilt head. They are excellent.

Alternatively, Giottos makes very good tripods too.

On a sidenote, I have just taken delivery of a Manfrotto Neotec tripod because of it's speed of setting up. If you're fine with lever locks then the Giottos or Vanguard would make good choices. If you can wait that long, I'll be making a video review of the Vanguard in a week or so.

Cheers

Thanks for the help and input! It's very much appreciated! :D I don't think I'll be getting a vanguard tripod though: as good as they look, they're slightly more expensive than the 055xprob and I'm pretty sure the 055 will oversatisfy my needs already.

I check out 3LT (3legged thing) some more and send them an email to ask some stuff. The thing that I dislike about their tripods is their small size: they 'only' go up to 146cm, which isn't really high enough for me :(

Tijmen

From what I can make out, both the 055X and Vanguard are around the same price. In fact I just looked up Amazon and found the Vanguard to be a little cheaper.

Both tripods will serve you well. You can extend Manfrotto's warranty online to 8 years while the Vanguard comes with a lifetime warranty. I haven't tried out the 055X but I can advise that the Vanguard is pretty easy to set up especially if you want to go low down. Both have lever locks which I have discovered I can do without which is why my Vanguard is up for sale. I will probably regret selling it as the Manfrotto Neotec I have now purchased is not very quick to set up if one needs to go low but as you may know, for conventional use it's the fastest around.

Good hunting
