Ok...I'm not sure the best place to post this so I'll try here. I have a modest website that usually gets about 75-100 hits per day. My web page is not my main marketing tool (far from it) but I do keep an eye on the traffic from time to time. Today, all of a sudden, my traffic is skyrocketing. I'm in the 5000+ views just for today and it keeps steadily climbing (at least for the last hour). Everything seems to be working ok with the site but this does have me a little worried because there is no reason that I should be getting that much traffic.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? I guess it could be that the site traffic analyzer is acting screwy (I'm hosted on yahoo if that matters). Could it potentially be something malicious?

Look at your logs in your hosting tools. You might see something there.

Nothing there yet. I just passed 7100 now. Waiting for the phone to start ringing. At this rate, I should be booked for the next 5 years by the end of the day ;)

It may seem like a lot to you but in the greater scheme of things that is not much traffic.
Be glad, looks like the search engines found you.
Did you just post a new gallery that is getting lots of looks?

I know it's not much compared to some but I've been bumping along for a number of years now with this site (probably about 5 or 6 anyways) with things staying pretty steady. I would have an occasional anomaly, but nothing even close to this extent. I have now just passed the 8k mark. I haven't posted anything new that would be that much out of the ordinary. Guess I'll just watch to see what happens :) Maybe I'm on the cusp of becoming world renowned. If so, I'll still come back and visit from time to time. ;)

Did you change anything which might have gotten you noticed by the search engines? Sometimes the robots latch on and just go nuts for a day or two.

Perhaps one of your "models" has posted a "link" to a photo on a facebook page. All of the "friends" are looking at it as well as friends of friends.

Where is the "traffic" directed - which page of your site? That will help you see what it happening.

I just turned on my "access logs" to hopefully get more info (they were turned off so they haven't recorded anything) Traffic is still coming in hot and heavy at +9500 now.

I could be that a news website (or some very popular blogging site) meant to link to some page, but the webmaster committed a typo, with your site being typed in instead.

I just use a hosting site, PBase, so can't do the analysis stuff, but sometimes the statistics just take a big leap for no rhyme or reason. Who knows? I don't see anything I've posted that would attract "google" attention. Of course, times when I've posted something of a "G&N" nature has picked up hits, but that's understandable...

Maybe a DOS attack on your server. I'd try contacting your hosting support and see what they say.

Or someone using it to send spam? Do you see any new excecutable pages (.php, .asp, etc) on the server that you don't recognize?
