I just got this battery from an Amazon seller but I thought that since it said "fulfillment by Amazon" I would not be in any trouble. I guess I was wrong! I didn't dare charge is so I've started the returns process and bought another directly from Amazon this time - I hope I have better luck! By the way, I have been buying lots from Amazon for years and this is the first time I have ever had a problem.

In the photos the one that came with my 60D is on the top.

Just a simple question - how do you know its fake? Besides cosmetic changes the only part I can see that is clearly different is that your 60D original battery has a stamped ID code on the back - otherwise they appear very similar/identical (details not listed on the front of the second battery are listed on the back it seems)

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

If you had it in your hand, they would seem worlds apart. The genuine one looks shinier, the polished parts are very polished, the label printing is not up to snuff on the fake and the code on the bottom left is completely different. I had a good dig around to make sure and this flickr discussion (external link) confirmed my suspicions.

Another seller on eBay claims the only way to tell if a battery is genuine from Canon is it comes in the clear blue plastic sleeve with the barcode on it.

Mine came in a normal clear sleve that was not taped shut.

Also, the + and - terminals are surrounded in grey plastic in the genuine one and black in the fake.

There have been some reports of similar looking batteries being genuine but the quality of this one is just not Canon.

Here are up close comparison pics:

Look at the contacts, canon label edges, lack of 4 digit date/manuf. stamp. etc.

btw: The copies are of the older Canon LP-E6, but as stated above they are worlds apart in quality

Here's a crop of the corner printing - the fake has cut-off corners whereas the real is rounded.

Fulfillment by Amazon means that the seller can stock Amazon's warehouse with goods and Amazon will ship for them. Btw, I believe there are 3 different LP-E6s that are all Canon OE.

I bought an LP-E6 from Best Buy. I opened it, and it was a knockoff. I returned it to Best Buy, got another one from a second location, which was also fake. Went to a THIRD Best Buy all the way across town, and finally got a genuine one.

I decided that someone bought a bunch of the fake chinese batteries for $15 each, then switched them out for authentic ones and returned them to Best Buy. They were the un-chipped batteries too, so I couldn't even charge them on the OEM Canon charger..

I would expect that a company as large as Canon might have batteries from different suppliers, with slightly different labeling.

Okay, here's the skinny from Amazon's Customer Images:

IMAGE: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51E74jFKvpL.jpg
Caption: "For comparison a real Canon battery is on the left, and the fake is on the right in the above picture."

Cut and dry, right? Nope, just another customer's opinion - countered by this image:

IMAGE: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51m5GAzkLrL.jpg
Caption: "This is a real Canon battery, I bought two brand new Canon 5D Mark II's cameras from BestBuy Store, boxs sealed and this is the battery it came with in the box. Its not fake! They just printed two different labels or who knows how many, it depends on the factory and when they were made."

"From Canon's website: Each LP-E6 battery pack has a microchip with a unique, 8-character serial number. You don’t see this number on the outside of the battery, but it’s embedded in the battery’s information source. When the battery pack is installed in the camera, you can register it using a menu command."

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

You can clearly see the cut blue corners on the printing on the right battery in the above picture - it's a fake.

This picture shows two genuine batteries.

I've been using a fake LP-E5 for several years - it's better than the original Canon LP-E5
Wowza - Go figure !

Is there a place you can order batteries 100% oem? For cheaper or used cameras I always buy third party batteries but when I buy the 5d mkII or III some day I may just keep it all oem.

I just received my battery for my 60d today from amazon and I'm glad that you posted this. My new battery must be a fake as well and it looks identical to one you received. There's also a slight difference in weight. I didn't pay attention to it when I opened it today. It doesn't have the serial number on the bottom like the original canon battery either. I guess that I'll be sending it back on monday. It wouldn't matter to me but I paid the full price to receive a genuine canon battery not a third party battery.

Being caught out with fake products through ebay, Amazon etc is growing world wide problem. If you want original go to a reputable camera store and bargain down a discount....
