Yes they are. I was blowing the leaves into a pile and I inadvertently uncovered a snake, about 6 foot long. Unfortunately it was gone before I could get my camera. I need to keep my phone with me all the time I guess. I think it sort of looked like this guy that a found earlier in the year as we have them all over and see them often, but I can't be sure. We also have rattlers.

Not a fan of snakes. I'm sure they serve some purpose...and I'm ok with that as long as they serve that purpose in YOUR backyard. :-)

They do. They keep the wood rat population in check. None in my yard as they all ran to your's. :)

<-- definitely no snake expert, but I believe that's a king snake. VERY beautiful and beneficial!
They are similar to this snake - http://www.herpsoftexas.org/content/speckled-racer (external link)
I was fortunate enough to have seen one of these in Brazoria County and one in Fort Bend County. How they got there, who knows.
Since they are rare in the US, they are collectables, though I'm unsure as to the legality.

I don't think it's a king snake but a coach whip.

Ok, I just searched coach and king snakes. There's just too many variances, even within the same species.

Now my eyes can't focus anymore. But before losing my eyesight, I had to concede that it looks more like a coach than a king.

That's why while hiking, nobody asks me, "What's that and should we stay clear of it?!?"
Always, my standard answer regarding everything, "Oh, yeah, I'd stay clear of that!"
I don't volunteer to help trap feral kittens, either. Hey, they could be baby bobcats!

Yea, when hiking I always steer clear. So many of them critters have such subtle markings that even when I do get a chance to photograph them, it's hard to identify. But down by the lake we have many cotton mouth, eastern rattlers and water moccasins. Each can give you quite a nasty bite.
