Interesting, I’ve never heard of a derecho. I’ve goo***d it now. Thanks Jay, sounds like something to be aware of but not experienced for real!

Definitely not something I want to go through again. I have gone to the basement less than a handful of times for tornado warnings and this was the quickest I ever headed down when I was sure my windows were going to blow in. My damage was minimal compared to the destruction many parts of the state experienced. I took my cat down with me and she was freaking out, which was making me freak out more.

Now, we're expecting 9 inches of snow by Thursday evening. Huge rush here to finish Christmas shopping. :-)

It's just another word for straight-line winds. I've also heard them called outflow boundary, micro bursts, and once in a while they can also create a haboob. I think NOAA has some measure that differentiates them but i can't find the reference. I believe a micro burst is localized, outflow winds are from a collapsing t-storm and can last for quite a distance and a derecho is if it lasts longer. The haboob comes in if the rain is replaced by dust. Here in TX they are very common but even in Illinois we had then though not so often. They are quite impressive. The really scary one is the hail core also accompanied by high winds and can do some impressive damage over a much wider area.

Great info and images! My view of the sky is pretty limited due to all the trees in my neighborhood. I'm still OK not dealing with it again.
We do get micro bursts and straight-line winds. Those aren't that uncommon here during the season. I had to Goo**e haboob. Never heard of that one. I see it's mostly in the Sudan (?) but looks freaky scary.

Our snow for tomorrow has now been upgraded to include blizzard conditions, so this means I need to shop for food today. Gah, me and the rest of the city. All the milk, water and bread will be gone. Heck, it's 9:42 a.m which means it's probably already gone. It's like those three items alone can save humanity.

Oh Lawd, I'm turning into that guy who speaks of nothing but the weather!!! On change of subject, I need new glasses. Mine are years old and my prescription has changed. Shopping for frames is a nightmare for me. Everything that looks great on everyone else makes me look like that crazy guy who lives alone and only talks about the weather...

You know the saying, "If the glasses fit..." :)

I need to get re-checked as well. I think the last time I got them tested is 3~4 years ago. Funny thing though, my eyes have gotten better. I use to be pretty blind without them but these days, I rarely wear them during the day as my vision is better without them than with them. At night, they still help. I keep wondering if the reason so many need glasses is because we put them on kids so early and the eyes never had a chance to fix themselves. The less I wear mine, the less I seem to need them.

Myopia tends to become less extreme with age all by itself. You might need glasses less even if you did wear them a lot, just because time passes and eyes do their thing.

Early reading might cause myopia in children, I don't know.

I did too. I got glasses at about age 5 and made an amazing discovery: now when cars passed, I could see people inside them from our front yard, not just the cars themselves.

But my mother was also nearsighted. I look much like her. Possibly I inherited her eyeball shape.

I was older than that, maybe 10. I clearly remember birds in the sky. I saw them in trees and on the ground and knew they flew, but never saw them in the air. I was fascinated at being able to see far. The other big thing was at school. I knew the teacher was writing things on the chalk board but was never able to read it. My grades instantly improved quite a bit.

You should have been tested in earlier grades. That was serious neglect.

I grew up in a rather poor neighborhood in the late 60s, 70s. Schools didn't do that back then. You learned it or you didn't. Teachers didn't babysit. Isn't like today.

My parents were so poor they would get our glasses out of the eye glass donation bucket they had at local grocery stores. I got my 1st t pairs from there, selection was horrible and so was my eyesight ... after wearing them.

I didn't need my first pair until I was around 22. I noticed I was have a tougher time reading addresses on houses when working EMS. I only wore them for driving. It wasn't until my early 30's that I started needed them for reading, and that's when I was prescribed progressive lenses. My eyes have changed enough that I can't wear my glasses when driving, and find I don't need them for that reason, only for everything else. My license still notes they are required for driving, but now that I don't drive professionally anymore, I think I'll talk to the doctor and explain I can see fine when driving without the glasses. When I was in school in the 60'e and 70's, our schools didn't do testing. Only if we exhibited problems seeing were we sent for eye exams. I do need them to better handle the settings on my cameras, however.
I tried OTC reading glasses, but my eyes have different focus issues (?) so basic reading glasses don't work for me. I could try buying two pair each with the power for each eye. Or I could use my insurance and just go to the eye doctor.

Weather update...cuz yeah, I'm THAT guy.

Snow and blizzard is here. Good times....good times. Both highs and lows for the next few days are below zero. I might need a sweater vest.

And I was just about to make an appointment with my eye guy, too.
