Yea, they do leave scars. I still have them on my ankles from a few years back. It is fun to poke open their nests though. They are insane swarmers streaming out in the thousands to devour anything close by.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

In the name of art, there are those who pour molten aluminum down fire ant nests, then dig out the solidified mass. Youtube has a few videos of this activity in action and google images has some of the results.

In the name of capitalism, you can part with a hundred dollars or more for one of the castings.

A co-worker of mine was out at the lake for a swim and put his trousers on top of a fire ant mound. He got some rant in the pants really bad and got bit in some very sensitive areas. For those of you that have never experienced a fire ant attack it can be simulated quite easily by dumping a charcoal chimney full of hot coals down your shorts. It is not a pleasant sensation.

My experience was similar but I was leaning against the front of my car taking a picture of a sunset and evidently I was also standing on a ant hill. The order came down and they chomped all at once. I did find something that will greatly reduce the burning though. You just have to scrub it in pretty quickly before their venom takes hold. Evidently it has the same active ingredient as the pharmacy stuff at a fraction of the cost.

Actually I have had the pleasure. My first night at Bergstrom AFB in Texas, I laid my pants on the floor when I went to bed. I got dressed in the dark the next morning as to not wake up my wife, slipping on my pants first. The pain was immediate and fierce, from my feet to my waist and all the delicates in between. When my wife managed to hit the light switch, we found the floor (and my pants) crawling with fire ants.

Fire ants are no joke.

Stepped on a fire ant mound when I was a little tyke in Alabama, wearing sandals. I had scars on my toes well into my teens.

 <---------------fire ant! yikes! :-| 8-)

Well, JJ's title was quite prophetic. If they weren't on par before, they are now. ;-)a

I love road trips. I used to prefer to drive at night. Little to no traffic and microwave pizza's from convenience stores at 3 in the morning!

Drive safe, JJ!
