I know y'all will find this hard to believe, but Moose did something not very bright today.

Yes, it true.

I decided to drain about half the pool water and replace it with fresh. One thing I forgot to do... turn the auto-fill off. So, as I was pumping water out, I had water going in. I wonder how much I wasted with that little trick. :-x

You have an auto-fill. Awesome. That would be so handy especially in the summer.

Yes, when you go on vacation.
Except for one time when I turned off the water supply to the house, in case a washer hose burst or something similar, and forgot that also turned the auto-fill off. The water level dropped below the skimmer while we were gone. I wonder how long the pump was running without water.

Don't you have bottom drains?

Both drains suck, but when one looses water, it gets air in the system and you lose all suck. Then the pump just pumps nothing. At least that's how it was with our family pool in the 70's. The pumps may have changed since then but ain't the principle the same?

It would be simple enough to put in a simple float valve to prevent that. Only problem with doing that is you would need to be careful to make sure it stays clean.

It depends on the pump. Above ground pumps need to have the top level of the water above the pump as they generally are not self priming and once you get air in there, your screwed. In-ground pumps are self priming and can be anywhere.

Yeah, mine's that way; pulls in water through the skimmer and the bottom drains, but if the level drops below the skimmer, it sucks strictly air. I'm really lucky it didn't burn up.

Mine will shlurp air but not all the time. You kind of hear it shlurp and then suck water and blow out a few bubbles.

Surely there is something in here that would make a great new title.

The whole section on this thread, from Moose admitting to doing something not bright (well he said bight), to the various responses, all full of potential TF fodder.

Ok smart ass, nice edit. I should've used "quote" but that uses up lots of screen ink. I know the participants in here will know who to believe. :-D
