If I take a pic in an aspect ratio of 4:3 on a G 11 and want to print it without any cropping issues, can I re-size it in Lightroom 3 to allow me to do this? Kind of a simpleton question, sorry. Thanks

You can print the full image without any cropping only if you keep the print at the same aspect ratio. For example, printing at sizes such as 6x8, 9x12, 12x16, etc.

But...

If you select Zoom to Fill in the print module then LR will make the image fit so there is no white space (assuming you are printing borderless) and then you can move the image manually to select how it fits on the page. Of course, this is in effect cropping the image, which you said that you don't want to do. Alternately, if you uncheck Zoom to Fill then the image won't be cropped and you will get white "bars" one direction or the other, which you can always trim off if you want.

I don't print very often at home, and when I do it is only on 4x6 paper, so I use whichever option gives the most pleasing result.

Hope that makes sense and addresses the intent of your question.

Trying to think about your question some more ... One of the beauties of LIghtroom's Print module (in my humble view) is that you don't have to "resize" anything. You just select the image that you want to print, select the print template (either Lightroom's or one of your own creation), set Zoom to Fill (or not), and click the Print button. Once you get a template set up to your liking it's a very simple process.

Thank you very much...This is helpful. I just want to be able to print some images that I took in a 4:3 aspect ratio. I have LR3 but don't print at home. I think I will just tell the printer not to crop and trim the white borders myself. They still fit in a 4x6 frame. Maybe have to get a little matting. Thanks.

Because of the popularity of 3x4 ratio P&S cameras, a lot of printers now offer a 4.5 x 6 inch size.
Also, there is one other option, although it's not a good one. LR won't allow this, but there are plenty of other applications where you can elect not to retain the aspect ratio and can resize each dimension independently and make it any ratio you want, but it causes distortion.

Ah ... OK, sorry, I assumed that you were talking about "local" printing.

For the occasional print job that I send out, I use Photoshop Elements to enlarge what in PS-speak is referred to as the "canvas" so that my image file is in the appropriate aspect ratio (5x7, 8x10, etc.) but has white borders on either the long or short sides (exactly which depends on target aspect ratio). That way I don't have to worry about the printer arbitrarily cropping off part of my image.

I enlarge the canvas by using the crop tool and dragging the crop boundary outside the edges of the image.
