I just gave my brother my older macbook pro 15 " core2 2.4 gig loaded up with seagate 500g 7200rpm, 4 gig ssd hybrid drive and had calibrated the screen with my huey pantone pro and all was well.

I just got the new macbook pro 15" i7 this week and today installed a ssd drive reload the software and calibrated the screen with my huey and the colors are all screwed up. Its a push towards cool/magenta.

Now I can't travel and process photos. Has anybody experienced this issue with the new mbp 2011?

Wonder if datacolor spyder will fix the issue or is it the new led panels the mbp uses?
The wd ssd and under sys info it said no trim was installed?

Now I might need to travel with my older core 2 17" mbp that screen calibrates properly.

There's something up with the LED monitors in these new Apple units. I had a similar problem when I tried to calibrate my new 27 inch iMac i5. Like your MBP, it has a backlit LED display. I tried calibrating it with my Spyder3 Pro setup, and the colors came out with an orange tinge. My guess is that the software is probably trying to warm up the cool blues. I didn't have this problem with my older LCD iMac. Anyway, I ran the calibration 3 times and got the same result. I eventually went back to the ColorSync calibration that is built into OSX. After using that, the colors look fine to me.

If you do a search, you'll find that you are not alone with this LED display.... others are having a difficult time calibrating it too.

Oh no I tried the expert calibration is that what you are referring me to but when I display a grey scale image its still off.

I was thinking of getting the Spyder pro 3 but since you mention that you also had no luck, I'm wondering what my options are.

I think I will give pantone a shout on Monday to see what they have to say. Maybe they will have tweaks in a software to handle the latest led screens.

Thanks

Yes, I was referring to the expert calibration.

I don't know how the Huey works, but if you try it again, you may want to experiment with the gamma settings and white balance. Others have reported OK results using a gamma of 1.8 and a WB of about 5500K. I have these options in the Spyder, but when I tried them they did not help much -- still got the orange tint, only a bit less apparent.

First make sure you have the latest Spyder3 Pro software. Then calibrate using native white point and gamma. (Not 6500k/2.2)

I've calibrated both my 2010 MBP (glossy screen) and a 27" iMac using Monaco OptixXR pro. Worked fine.

When you are calibrating the screen you do have the brightness at max or 2 notches below max.

I find that its bright enough at -2 from max.

I have a 17 from 2009 and it calibrates properly and the 15 too that I just gave to my brother. Its just this latest mbp. :(

I might try the spyder pro3, I see they have ver 4.02 for mac software.

I will try and calibrate with the huey again and change the different gamma and white point,

Success finally

I was able to calibrate the 2011 mbp by reducing the max brightness to three bars down and run the calibration.

Seems this screen bright at night I have reduced brightness is 4 to 5 bars down on the new macbook. My previous macbook was 3 bars down in evening and night use.

Once it was done the colors are accurate again. I can also turn back up the screen to max brightness with accurate colors.

What a relief. :)

Not really... Once you go back and readjust any display settings, you've invalidated that custom monitor profile you just created.

slightly off topic, I just got a new 2011 MBP as well and am wondering, will the Spyder 3 calibrate the laptops monitor along with an external one I attach to the laptop?

Thanks to ChasP for the suggestion of using native settings with the Spyder. I tried the settings he recommended (native brightness, native whitepoint, gamma of 1.8 or 2.2) and the colors come out well after the calibration. Skin tones look very nice, without an orange tinge everywhere else. The difference between the gamma settings appears to be a bit more contrast on the 2.2 setting as compared to the 1.8 setting.

synapxe, I believe the Mac will allow you to set and choose separate color profiles for each monitor. You can access this in the Preferences/Display settings. You should calibrate each monitor separately, obviously.

The express will let me create multiple profiles then? Im confused because most reviews say it will not work on multiple monitors and I'm not sure if that's a reference to dual displays?

I DIDN'T suggest native brightness. You do need to set a brightness level, then keep it there. And regarding gamma, Macs have been using 2.2 for years.

You can create as many profiles as you like, but the Spyder2 or Spyder3 Express kits don't support multiple monitors. You need at least the Spyder3 Pro and a capable video card.

You implied it by saying native. And I think Macs had gamma 2.0 for a short time in 2006.
