Is the 24-70 an overkill on my T2i? Anyone use the combo?

Perhaps with a battery grip...

When I owned the 24-70mm f/2.8L lens and used it on my XT (350D) it felt a bit out of balance until I added a battery grip to the XT...

I really appreciate the update. I am in the market for a 24-70 for my 7d (1.6x crop). I have never owned a FF body before so i guess you could say I don't know what i am missing... I have also never shot with anything wider than with a 50mm. I just picked up a tokina 11-16 2.8 on sunday and I have a 70-200 2.8. Seeing as how my style of photography does not require me to shoot wider than 50mm on a regular basis I think 24mm will be plenty wide for me. And the tokina will mostly be for landscapes and specialty wide angle affects.

Thanks for the thread!

I love this lens on my 60d- I mean backing up 2' is not that hard and as the OP pointed out, it so versatile and take a look on ebay, no one ever sells them. The best all around lens imo-

I have both the 24-70mm f2.8 L and 70-200mm f2.8 L is ii on my Kiss x4 (Japanese equivalent of 550D/T2i). It is a bit of 'overkill' but these are the two lens I carry all the time with my camera. I don't have the money to upgrade my body to the 5D2 (or newer mark 3) yet but my camera is only one year old it still has a lot of use left in it. I know others that have better bodies i.e. 60D and 7D but using 'kit lens'. I am glad I bought the best glass as they are what give you the best image quality. I still throw away a lot of photos but that's the nature of photography.
On the other hand the sharpness and colours while using those L lens does make a difference on this body. I often compare the lens with my older lens and you can see the difference at 100% crops in low light. Most people will complain about the weight. The 24-70mm is a chunky little thing and because it is short (compared to the 70-200) I can carry this lens all day. The 70-200 has IS that helps when hand holding at long focal lengths, but I find that lens is packed in the camera bag because it is a bigger lens and only suited where 70mm (remember we have to multiply that by 1.6 on a crop sensor) is required.
I bought (non L) primes and a 17-85mm lens but after buying my 24-70mm L lens I find I use that one the most on my 'Rebel T2i' canon camera. I will upgrade the body eventually as the high iso of the FF camera looks good. At least I know I can use these expensive lens when I upgrade one day and I still can keep my old camera as a emergency backup.

Good glass is an investment,
a camera is merely a commodity.

I looked at the specs for the new 24-70 II and it's 145g lighter than the old version but $900 more expensive :D

The only thing that sucks about the 24-70 on crop is that the 24 is not very wide.
