When is that one due out, the 60" Octabank. I'm sure it will be over a thousand dollars but more portable than my 74" which I'm already addicted to. Just wondering...

If you're referring to the 150cm indirect, Jannie, Mark Astmann told me a few weeks ago that it wouldn't be released until some time this summer. He also mentioned that the design of the light stand mount was still being worked on.

Doesnt the 74" go for around $1000? I would think the 60" would be under a grand.

The 74" indirect goes for around ~$1170. I think we've heard rumors of around a ~$900-$1000 price on the new 60" indirect.

At times, the size doesn't really make that much of a difference in the way prices are structured.

An example of that is the 27.5" deep octa and the 39" deep octa.

Currently, the 27.5" sells for $240, while the 39" goes for $288.

I'll bet you already have a 30-degree Lighttools grid for it ;)

Exactly! And there is no inherent reason for the EL Octa to be that pricey, either. It's just that Elinchrom *can* charge that price for two reasons:

1) For a long time it was the only game in town, and
2) even now, it's the standard to which other large modifiers are compared.

Bigger size doesn't necessarily mean bigger price. And it certainly doesn't mean that I don't want one! :)

Hey Rudi,

Isn't the Elinchrom 74" Indirect still the only game in town? Other than some of the very expensive 'para' type devices, it would seem that other octa's of that size are just standard forward firing modifiers.

Is anyone else making an indirect octa of that size?

There is a smaller (60-inch) indirect Bowens octa:

The Bowens Octobox 150 does look interesting and I like the round mask but you can't remove either the front panel or the inner baffle AND it won't accept grids. All deal breakers in my book.

Elichrom does make a 57" square indirect Octabank which I saw listed for $1,000. I have come to depend upon my 74" Octabank and leave it setup all the time it seems. Even when I'm using one of the Mola's for the key light, I'll move the Octabank 3/4's around to the back opposite side, take off the white cloth and use it as a liner/kicker while flagging it off the background or also using it to light the background- I'm only working with two lights and love the way this is pushing me.

Using the Octabank for headshots it's easy to do side contrasty lighting with a heavy shadow side that has a gentle wrap to black and I'll use a small 2'x3 silver Sunbounce a little on the opposite side if the camera to fade in fill when I want it.

I'm shooting normal people, 40-50-60 years old so the light has to be gentle even when I want a strong ratio light to dark.

My interest in the 60" would be if it is easier to set up, I still struggle a little with my 74" to put together and it makes me a little nervous getting it clicked in solid. But I don know if I'd get what I want out of a smaller one. I also however could be interested in the 57" square one, the catchlight from the Octabank is interesting, it's not very predominant yet does bring attention to the eyes, but it's not a hot spot.0

I don't think the new 60" indirect deep octa is going to be any easier to set up. It's going to be a cross between the 74" Indirect and a 39" Deep. The depth will add some tension and you're still going to have to mount the strobe as you do with the 74" Indirect.

I would be looking at the new 60" Indirect Deep Octa as a tool that you either need or want but I wouldn't be counting on it to make setup much different or easier.

I find the indirect to be the easiest to set up of the 39 DO and 53 octa because of the mechanism, with that said, I'm 6' 2", I'm sure a shorter reach would make it more difficult.

So I have the 53" midi - is there a big difference between this and a deep octa? Is it that the deep octa mounts so the light is inside and fires into the umbrella? Are there two diffusers still?

The deep octa is just a parabolic octabox. A lightbank is what has the strobe shooting into it.
