Wow, number 3 is a fantastic shot... I like everything about it, especially the reflection on the floor...

It is a lot easier with a f1.8 lens - makes a huge difference. Good timing, I would just try to tighen up some of the crops and your good to go.

Not shabby! You've done a great job capturing the peak of the action. All the girls feet are way high off the ground. I like that.

They're a little too lose for my likings, and the subjects are placed smack dead in the center in all of these. Mix it up a bit, use outside AF points instead of just the center, or leave room for compositional cropping later on.

A lot of the whites are also kind of over exposed as well as the skin tones. Dropping the EC 1/3 stop would cut that down a bit. Looks like there's some purple fringing in shot three around the ball, and I think ontop of the shoes. Barely noticable though.

Another thing, were you shooting wide open? Because the DOF doesn't look as shallow as it should be for f/1.8... I've gotten shallower DOF than that at f/4 with my 70-200. Just curious... :-)

I'd recommend using an 85mm f/1.8 for indoor volley ball. I wouldn't go any shorter than that... Not sure what there is for Nikkor glass in the 85mm range though.

Thanks for the tips. I was shooting at 1.8, my boss told me "no flashes" ;) .. When I bought the 50mm, being cheap at $100,I was unsure at the time if I was staying with Nikon or make the switch to Canon. I didn't want to SPend $800 on the Nikon 80-200MM and resell it for $600 then go to Canon, but I wanted something that would take decent pics and not waste my time getting horrible shot for the time being while while thinking... It's Been two months since, I'm going to Canon.:p

Soon to come:
Canon 20D
cANON 70-200mm 2.8
Canon 580EX

Bigger pictures, like the third and fourth would be good. OTOH, I really like the first two, don't think they need to be closer or cropped and I LOVE the low, low angle, particularly the first one. I think some here are a bit obsessed with get 'in your face' style images, but the big picture certainly has value, too.

Nice shots. Thanks for sharing.

I just ordered an 85 f 1.8 specifically for volleyball. My f2.8's are really not up to the task. It should be here just in time for district play.

I hear they are a good lens, 100 2.0 or 85 2.0 for volleyball?

These are great!!! :) I think I like the second one best, as it shows players from both teams in mid-air at the net. We aren't allowed to use flash in our gym, either, but I don't view that as a particular problem with the 20D, the 85mm/1.8, and the 100mm/2.0. We're done with volleyball here, and I'm eagerly awaiting basketball! :D

awwww...just wait till spring baseball, on top of the dugout in 27 degrees, rain, wind, snow...makes crummy football nights like heaven!

photos could use some cropping, a little bit too much of a 90 degree angle, longer glass and more head-on shots could help a lot

exposures look good, and 1.8 can be tricky

if you have the option, indoor volleyball should ALWAYS be strobed, its so dark in most of those gyms
