I'm not really satisfied with the outcome of the second picture. What could I have done differently to make this picture come out better? Thanks

Shot "faster" and used a larger aperture. With very long shutter speeds, you will get some motion blur due to the traverse of the moon, and you'll also blow it out (as you have done in the second). And when you're shooting the moon without any foreground elements in the composition, there's really no reason to use apertures smaller than f/5.6 (f/8 being the limit, IMO). Reason: You're basically shooting a flat disc where there's no reason to be concerned about depth of field.

I understand what you mean. As far as my second image would it have been possible to get the right exposure on the moon and the silhouette? or would that have taken combining of two images? I got the exposure I wanted on the silhouette but obviously the moon did not come out as desired.
