So either a wider aperture or a bigger distance between the subject and the bg.

First, your lighting appears to be too even and it is a little underexposed. Leave one light at the same power and boost the power on the other (key) light. I'd also raise the key up to get the catch light around 10:00 or 11:00. Also, try turning your wife/model so she isn't so square to the camera. Try different angles from both the left and right. Lastly, try shooting from a slightly higher point of view. Not too high, but have the lens at about eye level or slightly higher.

mpadula Senior Member More info | Too much blue in the photo.. The shirt blends in too much with the background screen and in my opinion maybe a different color background would have been better. I don't have enough experience to comment on much else since I am still learning about photography and I like to do mostly nature/wildlife photos, but that is just what stood out in my mind when I first saw the photo at a quick glance.
