I've read in the manual (of my 300mm f/4L) that IS should be turned off when using a tripod or you will get unexpected results. But then again, I remember reading somewhere that some photographers doesn't turn IS off even when using tripods.

If I use a tripod and a remote shutter release, do I need to turn off IS?

Can you share your real world experiences on this?

Also, I would assume that the case will be different when using a monopod?

Yes, if the lens manual say's to turn it off, turn it off. The IS will actualy cause movement and blur your picture. There are a few lenses that do not reqire this, but the majority do. Yes turn IS off when you use a remote release. I generaly keep IS on when using a monopod, because there still is some movement. Most people that I talk to use IS with a monopod.

With my EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, it says to turn off the IS on a tripod. For faster shutter speeds it isn't bad to leave it on, but I have found that that IS drifts so the image slowly moves in an ellipse. For shutter speeds longer than about 1/10s, the IS made the picture worse with this lens. The EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM is of the same era.

Some lenses are able to detect when there is no movement (such as when using a tripod) and they will turn off the IS in these situations. On older models that do not detect teh lack of movement, the IS can get caught in a feedback loop and will end up causing the blur that IS is supposed to prevent.

On a monopod, leave the IS turned on unless you honestly think you can hold the monopod more steady than a tripod.

To make things easy. Does anyone know of a Canon link that has a list of lens that need to be turned off and those that don't?

Cheers,

With my T2i and Canon 70-300 IS, I shut the IS off when using a tripod, but leave it on with the monopod. The only time I saw something "funny" with photos was when I used my S3IS on a tripod and leaving the IS turned on.

If you have a remote shutter then turn off IS. I did a crude test with my 55-250 IS on tripod. The vibrations caused by the pressing of the shutter button were minimized using IS. But with the remote shutter, there was marked improvement with IS off.

Of course, this was pixel peeping at 100%. But if you go to the trouble to set up the tripod and remote shutter, then you may as well turn off IS since it really does you no good.

This actually just happened to me last night. I was taking pics of the moon with my tripod and my 70-200 and forgot to turn off IS. Needless to say I think I only got 1 or 2 out of about 15 shot that looked decent. My suggestion.....Turn IS off
