Hello All, I came across this person online who is selling broken Canon 35mmL 1.4 for
$100. he droped the lense on the floor. according to him no optics have been damaged and after a full examination of the lense by CANON these are the parts which required.
1.YG2-0354-009 POWER DIAPHRAGM ASS'Y
2.YG2-0324-009 FOCUSING ASS'Y, USM
3.YG9-0551-000 BARREL ASS'Y GUIDE
4.CY1-2832-000 LENS ASS'Y 3RD GROUP
5.YA2-3096-000 BARREL FOCUS GUIDE
6.YA2-3117-000399 COLLAR.
total parts and labour will cost around $900. Now the million dollar question is IS IT WORTH BUYING THIS LENSE FOR $100 AND SPEND EXTRA $900 TO FIX IT? Please adivise me to make this decision in two days. many thanks in advance.
KK

Well, I doubt if I would do it -- only if you are a real DIY type of person, and then, how much of this stuff would you really need?

I'd say finding a good used lens will give you less grief...

But then that's just me!

I'd say no considering I see them in here for the 1100
And up range occasionally.....

Do the electronics work? How bout manual focus? If so, I'd snag it for 100 if the optics are good.

Unless he has sent you pics to validate the damage (or you can get it independently tested) stay well clear.

I would stay away from it. If it were worth fixing, the seller could have it repaired and sell it for its market value rather than trying to find a sucker. It would only be worth buying if the purchase price plus the repair cost is significantly less than the price of other used lenses that are in excellent condition given the risk involved. If that were the case, then the seller would make more money to do this themselves.

for $100 I'd at least take a look at it.

google the part numbers to get a parts catalog to see what they are replacing...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Wouldn't cost that much , would it? Where from?

You can ship it from B&H for much less than that.

Hi Mesodan, I asked the price in Jashanmal in Abu Dhabi Mall, and it was around AED 6000, coudnt find it in Dubai. B&H is a good option but even then i will be paying $1460 and shipping. dont you think i should take a look at the lense at all? and
Joesph thanks for you advise, i did google the parts and it appears all the parts are electronics.

I guess it could be a nice coffee mug anyway :D.

And 6000 AED = $1600.

It sounds like you really, really want someone to think it's worth it. It doesn't sound worth it to me or to anyone else. But you are not satisfied with that, so go look at it. The most you can lose (for now) is $100.
