Here are two of my most recent shots. I hope I am getting better at this. What do you all think?

They both seem like they have a soft focus. Hope this helps, video on outdoor portraits (external link).

Instead of running to a link:rolleyes: include your settings from these photos. EXIF always lets you and others know what you were using at that particular time.Then you can go from there getting things corrected.;)

1st images eems in focus but very shallow, so the boy is OOF

second image is OOF

I agree with Flo. I think that you can PS the heck out of the pics, first one especially, but still not be quite satisfied with sharpness in the boy's face. I think that this might be one of those "just missed" shots. Sorry.

Focus as noted above, and in the first shot you need to move the subjects fully into the shadow as the hotspot on the boy's head is blown out.
