I am not sure where to ask this question but I will give it a blast here and see if anyone can help...

I have been playing around with some focus stacking today and have got to grips with the software mechanics but am having a problem getting my flash to fire off camera using my Cactus trigger when shooting tethered through the EOS utility program.

I can shoot tethered no problem, I can get the flash to fire whilst not tethered using the on camera shutter button and I can get the flash to fire whilst using a remote trigger but whilst tethered I get no light :(

Hopefully that makes sense and some one has an answer?

Thanks in advance

Brian

Does the flash fire when it is mounted on the hotshoe and you are tethered?

An option I missed trying, will have to give it a try tomorrow as my flash batteries need charging, thank you :)

I could find nothing here on POTN but a trawl through google lead me to this thread, it would seem that I am scuppered, I have ordered a Yongnuo 460II which has been on route for a month :( But I could apparently fire the main flash mask it from the subject and use that to fire the slave if I have read it correctly.

Never had problems getting a strobe to fire while shooting tethered.

Can you give some more details?
The thread on DPreview mentions tethering and preflash I think, which should not be an issue when using a radio trigger?

Thanks for the offer, I am shooting with a 450D with Cactus V2 trigger and a vivitar 285hv, all works fine without the tethered shooting with USB cable. Connect to the computer and nothing happens.

Weird.
So everything works until you connect to the computer?

Is it only the flash that doesn't fire or doesn't tethering work at all?
Does the flash fire if you press the "test" button on the Cactus? (Both with and without usb cable attached)
Have you tried connecting the Vivitar to the camera using a sync cord?

What camera settings?

Have tried the camera in Manual, TV and AV modes... Tethered shooting works no problem and I have full functionality. The test button fires the flash in all modes tethered and not tethered and with live view on and off but I get nothing when I instruct the shutter to open with the computer interface?

Unfortunately I have no Sync Cord and I live smack bang in the middle of nowhere and will take about a month to get my hands on one.

As you say wierd, am trying to play around with some focus stacking and thought I would get clearer slices on a macro stepping the focal plane with the pc rather than twisting the ring on the lens, hey ho!

Thanks again

Brian

When you are saying "when I instruct the shutter to open", are you referring to using live view? In that case: The flash shouldn't fire. It only fires when you hit the "shutter button". (top right in the screenshot)

Cool will give it a try, was using live view to see the movement of the slices as I focused. Will try turn off live view and see what happens :)

What I meant: The flash won't fire when using live view. However, live view should not cause the flash not to fire when taking a shot...

Just to get things straight and narrowed down: the flash won't work with tethered shooting, period, correct? That's whether shooting wireless or hotshoe-connected. But, the flash will work in all other configurations (non-tethered)?

Maybe you could contact the flash makers and see if there's a known issue?

Resurrecting this thread as I am having a similar issue trying to do some product shots. I have two Einstein lights connected with the cybercommander for remote triggering. This problem seems to be aggravated by lack of focus. If I reposition my object - regardless of focus should the flash still not fire?

What I need to do to get mine to work is the following

- use autofocus to lock onto subject
- set lens to MF
- fire lights from camera
- connect to computer [flash then works]

I'm thinking its some obscure setting life AF mode or something similar that prevents the flash from firing. I'd love to figure this out. Google has not been my friend.

I wouldn't have a clue -- you might check in the Flash sub-forum:
