I know nothing of ball heads, help please

I have a Slik 700 dx tripod but I cannot stand the pan tilt head. Its a pain in the butt to adjust and now its starting to tilt/slip forward when the camera and lens is attached (gear in sig).

Can I just remove the pan tilt head and attach a ball head? If so can someone recommend me one comparable in price? The entire tripod was around $140. I dont think Im ever going to attach a lens heavier than whats in my sig, MAYBE a 70-200 F4L but Im still deciding.

You should be able to remove it as you can with most tripods. As to a good ballhead, I would recommend the Horusbennu LX-5 if you are willing to give a newer brand a try, if you want to stick with the tried and true brands, the Manfrotto 498RC2 should work.
