I ventured up to South Mountain Reservation in Millburn, NJ with my gear on Saturday evening. The moonrise shot is pretty much SOOC with some slight tweaking in sharpness ( shot in RAW ) and no cropping.

The white moon shot was taken about 0100 EDT from my front lawn. I played around with the setting. I used Av Mode, f11, Spot Metering and FEL * button next to the shutter. You lose one stop when adding the 1.4X TC but in the f11 range it does not matter.

Both were shot on a WH-200 Wimberley head on a Manfrotto CF tripod. This is my long lens bird set up. Works well for the moon!

So doing the math: 500mm lens times 1.4 TC = 700mm focal length. On a 1.3 Crop Factor body ( the Canon 1D4 ) = 910mm effective focal length.

Thanks , appreciate the kind words ! Mine are far from being where i'd like them to be tho . I find it hard to get a good focus with my XSi attached to the C8 . Lot easier on my refractor but i don't use the refractor often . BTW your second image looks great also . What % did you crop at ? Try cropping it @ 100% and see if the sharpnest is as good as this one .

The moon on the skyline is a great shot. It's unbelievably big! I know it was a supermoon but nonetheless.... :D

Thanks David. I went out the following night to another location to the north of where the skyline shot was taken. Very promising but some clouds got in the way and ruined the view. There were many other camera nuts out there with their gear. One guy had an impressive old 8x10 large format camera with the bellows on the front of it and a sidearm support. He said he was going to take TWO whole pictures, one being a double exposure.

When the moon finally came into view, late I might add, it was well above NYC. Oh well. Packed up the gear and went home. Have to wait another 18 years! Or just wait until the next full moon and see what we can get.

Thanks. I've had a few friends ask me to send them the photo. Great idea but I wonder what it would look like printed on a large size photo. The ISO was 12800 and I'm thinking it'd be a bit 'noisy' since it was pretty dark by the time the moon made its appearance. :)

True, it's a bit grainy but you might be able to work some of that out with processing. Mostly in the sky.

That first one looks impressive. I also thought it's that same cloud that Ron got on his! I did notice that your moon has a nose, courtesy of the two aerials sticking up from the skyscraper :)
