I am trying to send money via paypal gift and it's asking who will pay the fee.

When did paypal require a fee to be paid for sending money via gift?

If you are purchasing something using the gift option, be aware that you have no protection.

I think it's because you are using an ATM debit card and not a checking or savings account.

Edit: That's exactly the issue, see here https://cms.paypal.com …&locale.x=en_US#8.%20Fees (external link)

I think that is it. I had my checking account active before. I don't know why it switched. I'll try to switch it back.

Thanks

I don't think I can set it where the money is withdrawn from my checking account like it used to be unless I select Echeck.

Also, there isn't a $5 fee for using Echeck like there used to be.

It's been a while since I used paypal for anything. I guess it's changed since I last used it?

I just want to set my account to instantly withdraw directly from my checking account like I used to do.

Not sure what the problem is. I use a checking account to fund all my paypal purchases and gifts.

You can't click that blue change next to your listed ATM card to change funding to your checking account?

You're not using an existing paypal balance or a direct payment from a bank account, that's why there's a fee.

When I click on that I get the current option of the bank card, or I can switch it to echeck. There is no option for an instant payment from my checking account. Could it be something with the recipients account?

I guess I'll just use echeck so I don't keep the person waiting who I am trying to send the money to.

That's what i'm trying to do though, and for some reason I can't.

Maybe paypal is watching my account for using the gift option a few times in the past?

If that was the case then 90% of the people buying and sellling on here would have their account being watched.

I just went ahead and used Echeck gift. Takes longer, but doesn't charge a fee. Hopefully the recipient doesn't mind.

I guess for now on it's going to be Echeck.

Could it have something to do about verified addresses? I am not sure the recipient is verified since I didn't see anything indicating he was or wasn't.

It's been a while since I used paypal :(

Direct payment through your bank account is an e-check. If you want an 'instant' payment, it's either through existing paypal balance, cc, or debit card.

You sure? I've sent and received gifts through paypal and they haven't been e-checks, only instant payments.

Edit.....I just set up to send a paypal gift to my mom's email address and it let me do an instant payment from my checking account.

It usually takes 3-5 days for those eChecks to clear in the future use Mass Pay ($1 maximum fee) if you want to avoid fees without using gift. You just need to upload the payment info as tab-delimited which you can easily create the file in notepad, word or whatever by simply hitting the tab key instead of space bar. This way you aren't breaking the "gift" rule and Paypal wont flag your account if something goes wrong with the transaction.

Ditto! That's why i'm baffled.

In the past hen I used the gift option they were instant gift payments with no fee's withdrawn from my checking account.
