"Apple's Aperture app has suddenly disappeared from the Mac App Store after weeks of sitting among the top grossing apps, suggesting a new version may be around the corner.

When the Mac App Store debuted in early January, Apple's own Aperture 3 was one of its biggest hits, thanks in part to a steeply discounted $79 price. The professional photography title remained in the store's top grossing titles.

However, the title has now disappeared from the Mac App Store with no mention of an update, although Apple's Aperture 3 (external link) page is still in place and offering a free 30 day trial."

I'm a bit skeptical since Apple usually waits a couple of years between updates and it's only been a year since version 3 was released (Feb 2010). At the same time Apple has historically dropped the price of products it was about to replace before releasing the new version so I guess it's a valid rumor to some point.

It's still in my Mac App Store and I just upgraded the OS to 10.6.7 - so I know it's current.
Price is still $79.

This would be too soon, in my opinion. Apple usually takes 2 year cycles it seems.

Aperture release update 3.1.2 is probably the reason for this rumor

I agree that it would been too soon for a replacement.

Yeah I'd wager it's just an update.

Out of curiosity, what would y'all like to see in a new version, aside from speed improvements and the like? For me, there are obviously little things like a better noise reduction method and some type of tool for handling purple fringing. But the biggest thing that I want is a stupidly simple one: Lightroom-style crop overlays. I love being able to overlay the golden mean, etc., and I really miss that in Aperture. I know it's silly!

I have an older mac mini so SPEED until I upgrade. Secondly I'd like to see an easier way to auto mask out thing from a photo. I usually find that Aperture either works perfectly, or it looks like crap. A smart fill like the new photoshop has would be awesome.

About purple fringing what about just using a color adjustment brush and desaturate the purple in that area? If you have other purple you could just brush the adjustment in/out where you want it.
