Does anyone know whether the BGE7-L plate from Really RIght Stuff for the gripped 7D will fit the 5DII with the BG-E6 grip? I am renting a gripped 5DII this weekend and the rental company does not carry plates. Thanks!:)

EDITED 26 March 2011: For the record, the BGE7-L plate fits the gripped 5DMkII just fine.

I don't think it does, do you not have any generic plates?

Based upon my test of a Kirk L bracket for the 5Dc not fitting the 5DII, I'd say no as well.

5DIII, 7D, 1D2n, 5D & 20D. Mostly L glass from 300 f4 down to 10mm fisheye.

Thanks for the replies. I will find out on Friday when I go to pick up the camera. If it does not fit, I won't be taking it. Looking at the pics from the RRS website, the L plate for the 7D should fit the 5DII, but may not be perfect. I have also sent en inquiry to RRS.

Tjena,

you can do the research at : http://reallyrightstuff.com …ey=cat&code=LPLATES-CANON (external link)

BGE6-L: L-plate for Canon BG-E6 grip: L-plate for Canon EOS-5D Mark II with optional Canon BG-E6 battery grip

BGE7-L: L-plate for Canon BG-E7 grip: L-plate for Canon EOS-7D with optional Canon BG-E7 battery grip. This unique L-plate features bidirectional dovetail mount on bottom of plate.

If they did fit...would make me wonder why RRS has seperate plates. But call or email them to know for sure.

do they fit perfectly? Nope.
Will they fit if you have access to a grinder and don't mind a customized bracket saving you $150? Yep.

I've owned a 5D, 5Dii and 7D. My 5Dii bracket fit the 7D after a bit of grinding, but the 5Dii bracket WOULD NOT work on the 5D, even with a LOT of grinding (I didn't bother trying). Not sure on the 5D going up as I didn't have one to try.

They're custom brackets for a reason though. I also have 2 normal square plates I use when I have other cameras I need to use on my tripod. They're not Ls and not even RRS (cheap adorama plates) but they do the job in situations like this.

Thanks. My L plate for the gripped 40D does fit the 7D, but it's a bit tricky to connect the remote cable. If the one for the 7D does not fit at all, I'll have to get a cheap square plate to use the 5DII on this trip. Thanks for all the input.

Just got feedback from RRS (look at the PS below):

HI Carlos, I doubt that plate for the D7 grip will work with that camera body, or BGE6 battery grip. In fact if it would have fit we would not have had to make two plates, so I can safely say it will not fit to our standards. You may try it and find that it will work for you in a pinch. Without those two cameras in my hand I can’t tell. The plate you are looking for is the BGE6-L (if you using the grip on that 5D MarkII) if you not using the grip the plate is the B5D2-L. With UPS World Wide Express I can have it to you just about anywhere in the world in 2-3 working days(yes by the weekend). Let me know what you decide. I am here to help you if I can. J Happy shooting!

PS, for renting a camera I have used lens foot plates to get the camera in the clamp. A lens foot plate such as an L84 (I see you have one) can be mounted on just about any camera in a fore aft orientation. That will allow you to mount that camera in the clamp. You will have to use the drop notch to go vertical, or shoot with a collared lens and let that camera hang off the back. Then you can spin the camera in the collared lens. I am here for you if you want to get the other plate. J Good Luck.
Thank you, Casey

I had of course forgotten about the L84 plate! Aren't they simply amazing?
