I'd say it all depends on your specific needs -- if you are a photographer who needs to process photographs with various touchups, Photoshop Elements can do the job for ~$100. The "standard" edition of Photoshop CS5 at ~$700 gives you advanced tools that enable you to do a bit more but with high volumes and is geared at people working at a "pro" level (or hard-working amateur) of photography.

For someone who is working with graphics arts and wants to incorporate those into photography, there are Photoshop "extended" editions that give more capabilities.

And then, for photographers who prefer a photo-centric workflow that is concentrated on "developing" photos and then quickly organizing them and outputting them through print or the Web, there is Lightroom -- many people use that with Elements or standard Photoshop as an "editing plug-in".

So, specify your needs, and a specific workflow/approach will help define your wants!

Ah, well, what have you been using?

There are some basic things that can be important for putting together a good computer workstation, whether PC or Mac -- plenty of memory/RAM and a good amount of hard drive space with a second internal hard drive for data are a couple things offhand. Don't go "super-cheap" but you also don't need to "break the bank"...

I purchased a new PC recently. It has an Intel i5 64 bit OS with 8 gigs of RAM and a 1 TB HD. I have opened about 20 raw images and have done lots of heavy processing with virtually no slowdowns. I really love it. I would have purchased an i7 but couldn't afford it and turns out for now I didn't need it.
