Selling photos of buildings

Hi All,

I have tried googling my specific question but I just find websites of people selling postcards/images etc of Cathedrals.

However, there is a local Cathedral where I live, and they would make quite nice postcard type prints.

What are the rules of selling images of a building such as this?

Is it ALWAYS best to cover my tracks and ask for written permission (via email or post) to sell images of a building (regardless of whether the law says I can or can't?).

My understanding is that if you can see it from a public view, taking the picture isn't a problem. Turning around and using that picture in a commercial setting, however, would be. Obviously, there are exceptions, but this isn't one of those exceptions.

Heck, you can use them for your own non-commercial purposes (that is, if you decide to print the image and use it for your own post cards, etc), then you would be fine.

Pledge 12% of profits to the cathedral and have them sign a release
