Fabulously informative forum! I have read most of every thread on lenses here, the past few days. I rarely wander onto a board to ask, "what color, which model", etc., of any product, but in this case I am stumped or, caught up in too many things to select from, and suffering buyer's inertia, as in getting off the dime.

I have 40D, with 17-85 EFS IS lens. Consider myself an above average amateur shooter, as I've been pushing the button since the late 1950s, on everything from my first Kodak Duaflex, to 35mm & 6x9 film cams, a cheap Calumet view camera, et al. I have good knowledge of photography, but this indecisiveness as to 'which len(s)' is chewing me up.

I am going to buy one, or two new lenses for the 40D, and I really can't decide which way to go.

I mainly shoot landscapes/views, my cars & m'cycles, some family shots, some 'close-in' stuff in the woods, (not macro), and anything that compositionally catches my eye. Seldom need long reach telephoto, and can't match the pros that do that.

Torn between EF 24-105 L IS, (which would probably replace my current 17-85), in combo with the 10-22. Or, the 17-55 EFS and 10-22 in combo, or 24-70 L alone, or the 17-55 alone, and call it good for awhile.

I realize that any 'two' are way beyond any 'one', cost-wise and I am not throwing money, but I could do 'two'.

I am fairly satisfied with pic quality of the current 17-85 EFS, though I have cranked sharpness and color up a bit in the cam. Having never shot a true "L", I wonder if I've been missing the deal, or if my newer lap top monitor is just 'sharper' and less forgiving. I use LR3 very sparingly, as I have not yet become proficient at it, other than basics.

In looking through my best pics/keepers, I find a majority shot in the 17-60 focal length range, fwiw, with the current 17-85 EFS lens. An occasional longer shot...

The long 'question' is to give some reasonable background, and I appreciate any and all opins and ideas. Thank you.
Best Regards,
David

I'm a huge fan of the 24-105 + 10-22 combo, myself. I tried going the 17-50/55 route, but found that my shooting caused me to pass on a shot or switch to the 70-200 way more often than I was happy with. With the 24-105 I can shoot most 'general' shooting and not have to swap except in very specific cases.

When I had my 7d I loved the 17-55. Is a super lens and my only regret going full frame with 5d was it was not compatible. Doesn't sound like you need anything longer and you gain a stop on 24-105.

If you want to upgrade your 17-85 and want to keep the zoom range, you're best bet for a single lens solution is the Canon 15-85. This lens has great IQ and versatility. If you need faster glass and consistent aperture, then go with the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and Canon 17-55 f/2.8. I have this combo and love it!

7D + 17-55 = amazing. Throw in a 70-200, and a 35mm prime, and you have a sweet setup.
