If you can afford the mkii...get it.

Need a reason to buy it?..

...it comes with a CD. lol

but seriously, if you can afford to buy the mkii or you have a bunch of gigs coming up...I say make the initial investment and buy it. It'll pay for itself over time.

there's a good reason you don't see many of either for sale at the buy/sell boards. People buy them and keep them because they're GREAT lenses! I recently sold a razor sharp copy of the V1 and miss it more than a little.

It's the never ending debate really.

The quick answer, to your simple question is.... if you can afford it, definitely get the MkII. If you can't, save up for a few more months until you can.

Its the only lens I like to use on my 7D. Too bad I have to borrow it from a friend each month- I went the body route, he went the glass route.

Yup. I've owned both. The MkI is impressive. The II is way more so. Worth the higher price for sharpness alone. The advanced IS is good -- really, really good. And for all the built-like-a-tank feeling of the MkI, the MkII feels even more solid. It's like owning a great car and then driving the new model that replaces it. You don't want to admit it, but the new version is everything you loved about the old one, only much better.

Definitely the MKII! Its a collection of sharp primes from 70 to 200 in a single lens barrel.. which is currently tough to get elsewhere!

I'm in exactly the same boat at the moment. The MK I seems to be going for about £1000-1100 second hand but from what I've seen of the MK II it's an insane lens.
