My son is turning 6 in May and is starting to do more sports stuff and my daughter is 2 but runs like the devil and I can't keep up with any of them with my 5D. I have a 40D on the way but thats meant to be paired with the Sigma 10-20 for a Real Estate kit, so that leaves me with the primes (which I love) and probably a 70-200L down the road. I would really like to keep my primes so Im thinking I could settle for a 1.3x crop to gain superior AF and metering. What do you all think?

Just thinking here....another option is to get the 7D and get something like the 24L, Sigma 50 and 85. I could probably live with that, then I will have money left over for couple of zooms. Decisions decisions! I guess my point is to get obtain better auto focus, but still have a nice set of primes.

I own the 7D...great camera and super for sports/action.

However, with kids...if you can get a 1DIII...well go for it. Those 45(45 right?) AF points will get you some good shots of the kids. And that camera will carry you through their growing up years.

(just saw your second post about the 7D)

Like I said, great camera. I use it for grand kid action events...works great.

:D

From your statement, it seems that you need it.
Go for it, but have you thought about 7D?

What do you all think?

ask yourself, can you go back & shoot the same pictures again?

if so, you don't need the 1D3
if not, then you do...

ask yourself, would the pictures be any better?

if not, you don't need the 1D3
if so, then you do...

best equip yourself with the best gear you can comfortably afford & cease worrying about it.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. The only thing pulling me to the 7D is the video but Im not sure if I will use it, it still cant AF while taking video correct?

Joeseph, as for your questions...I dont think its a matter of if I can shoot the same pics again (although I probably can). Its a matter of usability. I can never get the outer AF points to work properly especially indoors and I like to frame my shots properly so I focus and recompose, by the time I finish recomposing my daughter is out of the frame LOL.

Ha, most people ask for help to drag them out of being convinced they need some new expensive toy... ;)

Try out that 10-20 on the 5D for your real estate (hint: use a 1.4x), just as wide as the 10-20 on the 40D. :)

Then you don't need the 40D and can look for something else. :)

The 1DIII is an awesome camera....built like a tank, and a multi-frame burst rate above any other camera I've ever owned!
If you need any other "persuading", I know where you can get one used in very good condition (approx 10K shutter actuations) for around $2K.
