Yeah, I understand what you mean. I didn't have a 1D lll, but had a 1D II and sold it to purchase a 7D. The 7D is a great camera, but the feel of a 1D in my hands felt more comfortable.

Definitely far from being the biggest concern on my mind :). Just with spring in the air (though it's currently snowing outside), got me thinking to some of the awesome action shots that body helped me produce. The 1D3 has the nearly as good IQ of the 5D with all of the auto-focus and tracking power you can use. Really awesome machine.

I actually dislike the 1dmk3 blooming orange skin tones when slightly over exposed or nasty almost unrecoverable colours when under exposed. Also how center weighted and spot meter is better than evaluative when bouncing flash cause metering is touchy.

I will say the IQ is excellent when you land the exposure. I never have this problem with my other bodies I currently own or past bodies. My 1dmk3 is dead accurate on AF though.....

That's odd -- I never get those impressions from the 1D3 -- to me the colors come out great if I need to boost the exposure a bit and I've never noticed bad skin...hmm.

That I don't know about because I'm typically using Manual Exposure with flash and I prefer spot or center metering.

Tony,

I find the 1dmk3 extremely sensitive when it comes to metering. None of my camera's have been as sensitive in metering. Funny how I was at a wedding a while ago and a guy shooting a 1dmk4 expressed the same sensitivity in metering when he owned a 1dmk3. Its taken me a while to get use to the 1dmk3. Oddly every camera I've owned has taken me almost no time in getting familiar. I find bouncing flash to be tough and I'm constantly playing with FEC compared to my other bodies.

I use the Xrite color passport and colours are great when I get proper exposure. With the 1dmk3 if I over expose I can wipe out skin details virtually instantly.

Shooting outdoor events at the drag races or well evenly lit outdoors the 1dmk3 is fine. Dynamic lighting where contrast and light changes quick the 1dmk3 I own is no where near forgiving as my 5dc or 5dmk2. I can now work my way around this "metering" but Ettl bounced flash (regardless of all of my canon flashes) the exposure can require quick tweeks non stop.

Fixed studio lighting the 1dmk3 is actually quite nice.

I think perhaps your 1DIII had some issues that required it to go back to canon to get fixed.
Mine does not have that issue.

As for loving the 1DIII, I agree.
I have a 7D and the 1DIII is what I use for photos and the 7D for video.

I am kinda thinking about merging the two and trading for a 1DIV.

Alan,

I almost always used spot or cw, so never really noticed any issues with the metering. I found the dynamic range of the 1D3 to be great actually. I could over or underexpose to almost -2 or +2 without worrying about it. That being said, I almost always shoot +1 as I find images so much easier to work with than if they're underexposed.

Funny... Ever since picking up my 5D2, my 1D3 has mostly sat in my bag, unused. :p

I'V got three 1DMK3, and each metering bit differently. But I always find the color was accurate, and the best flesh tone color from all the camera I'V got in the past. I'm selling my 7D and looking back at a used 1D4 or 1D3
