The ‘good old days’ have gone Capn’. The Thames used to be full of them plying their trade at the turn of the last century 1800s-1950s. Some that remain now gather annually for a barge race from Gravesend to the Thames estuary and around the Kent and Essex coast and beyond. A few of them offer pleasure cruises. Now a lot of them have static moorings and are converted for living. As you can guess, it can be an expensive hobby :-)
A friend of mine had one moored on the River Medway and he occasionally sailed it across the channel and toured the canals on the continent.

They certainly had interesting history. Hay into London dung out for farmers.
See they even made it to Dunkirk.

They look very nice in full sail.
