Guys the LX-5 is a bit bigger than I had anticipated for my tripod so I went ahead and looked at the FX-34Q ...does this tiny thing really support 18kg over the LX-5 that supports 12kg? LOL..

All I know is mine takes some effort to tighten and the rubber knob ring starts to slip. At that point I just have enough for my 50D and lens. A tighter adjustment would be nice.

I would also like to hear if this is just mine and/or if there is something I can do to it to get tighter holding power. Anyone know how to take these apart?

The ball head weight and size is right for use with my HB FX-7439TT carbon fiber tripod which I really like and is very light and rigid. It's much lighter than a similar CF tripod I bought from Costco. I don't even notice carrying it in it's bag on long hikes. My wife is even willing to carry it for me. Maybe that's why I don't notice the weight :-).

I'll let you know once I get mines, I went ahead and ordered the FX-34Q ...I will possibly sell my LX-5 soon since it's ballhead diameter mount is much bigger and not exactly a travel ballhead. It's sturdy as hell and I like it a lot ! Just doesn't allow my tripod legs to fold back onto it.

I just don't know if this FX-34Q will hold my 5D3 w/ grip + 70-200 II or 85L II with ease and super sturdy...:/

Has anyone put a RRS clamp on the LX-5 ballhead yet?
Looking at a RRS B2-Pro II screw clamp.
Do the grooves in the clamp fit the top of the ballhead well ?

Just received my HB LX-5 and I definitely like it.

Thanks !

Plate and clamp are ordered.
Will post the results next week.

Also, FWIW, I have a FR-T1 for my Black Rapid strap. Works great on my Manfrotto RC2.
I drilled out the hole on the LX-5 plate to get the FR-T1 to fit.
The FR-T1 fits the plate now but the FR-T1 just slightly extends below the plate to cause it to not sit flush on the clamp.
Even tried removing the washer that goes in between the screw and the plate. Not quite enough.

You need an arca Swiss plate, for what camera?

I read through this entire thread and have been emailing Ebay vendors a few weeks about these ball heads. In the end, I went with a Sirui K20X.

Why?

That picture a few pages back of a broken LX3, I think it was, for one thing. Secondly, only the LX5 and the 45Q have tension knobs, an essential feature, in my opinion. The LX5 gets knocked off my list because it's red and unavailable in black. So that leaves the 45Q, which seems quite good.

The difference at this point for me is that B&H sells Sirui but not HB. It's also rated for more weight (they all exaggerate, I'm sure). Some positive reviews on B&H were written by pros, at least self-described as such, but their descriptions of use lead me to not doubt their occupation.

Any arca swiss plate should work. I don't have that head in particular but I have two other horusbennu heads and they are both well compliant with the standard and fit tightly with all the different brands of arca plates I've tried.

L-plates from RRS are awesome of course, but if you don't need a full L-plate, my vote goes to Hejnar photo http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/ (external link) . By far the best I've found for the price if you're just in the market for normal flat plates. Lots of options for sizes too.
