I'm thinking seriously about getting this lens. But I've run into a difference in specs from different vendors.

Amazon says "Lens construction: 5 elements in 5 groups"
Canon store says "Lens Construction: 10 elements in 9 groups"
B&H says nothing.

B&H says Lens diameter: 2.4", Length 2.2"
Canon store says Lens diameter: 2.9", Length 2.2"
Amazon says diameter:2.7", Length 1.7"

Are there different designs of this lens? Where can I find the info about different designs? They all talk as if it is exactly the same lens!

Or should I just forget about it & order the lowest cost & live with what I get?

I'd like to do the smart thing if it's possible.

The 28/2.8 is a 5/5 construction.

So how do you tell? Where's the build reference? Is the 28/1.8 also a 5/5? or a 10/9?

Now to find THE best price. So far, it's $510 at the Canon store.

Thanks for replies.

It's $484 ar J&R (external link) with free shipping. It shows out of stock but you can still add it to your cart and checkout. Adorama also had it at $484 a couple of days ago when I got mine, but has since raised their prices.

There's this to keep track of pricing:

Just to throw another option in there, consider the sigma 30 1.4.

Otherwise, the 28 1.8 is a great little lens.

I was already a huge fan of the 28 1.8, which - in my opinion - is one of Canon's most undervalued lenses (next to the 100 f/2 that always gets overshadowed by the 100 macro and 85 1.8 too often).

I started using the 28 1.8 on full frame last weekend, and now I absolutely love it! Already pixelpeeping-sharp on my 5D @ f/2 (didn't even try / need 1.8, but it was always acceptable). The focal length on a big aperture gives a look you simply can't achieve on a crop body, unless they come out with a 17mm f/1.4 or so.
All that said, nobody show me any 24L or 35L pics, because they're probably better, but for what I paid for the 28 1.8, nothing can beat it.

Also, the 5/5 vs 10/9 confusion is probably just a supplier mistakenly listing the 28mm 2.8 specs. Make sure you don't accidentally buy that ;)

Some of my lenses focus beyond infinity...!

No problem. I've been eyeing it myself.

Now a lot of "out of stock".

The big brown truck dropped mine off earlier this evening. I was going back and forth between this lens and the Sigma 30. I've taken a few test shots and so far I am quite satisfied with my choice.
