So my Mk2 started issuing grinding sounds from the IS. I talked to the customer support and they requested the lens for a checkup. Today I received it back. The very first thing I noticed is that one the factory foam caps I packed my lens in the box is gone. They just wrapped that end of the lens in some rug. :-(. The packaging is not near what you get from a store. There was no padding or foam peanuts, nothing. The lens box was just dancing in the postal box.

The repair order confirms the grinding sound and that it was coming from malfunctioning IS. The job description states they replaced the IS.

So I mount the lens on the camera and ..... the grinding is still there ! vmad
Are they joking ? The last time I had problems with my Mk 1 I had to send it three times. Every time they would do something but the issue has been fixed on the third attempt ! I am almost done ! switching to Nikon is getting more and more sane option!

If someone has Mk 2 can he confirm how loud the IS engagind sound is ? In my case the IS is silent when it is working but when it goes on and off it sounds like switching gears in manual transmission.

My first 70-200 sounded like that (grinding)... My replacement has never made the noise.

Sure, here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybm03RCq7y0 (external link)

You should hear AF hunting noise and annoying screeching sound when IS goes on and off.

Just pressing the focus button. It works like this:

1. I press the AF button on the camera.
2. AF starts moving.
3. In about 0.5 sec I hear that annoying sound. that lasts about 0.3 sec. The image in the viewfinder jumps very slightly. Then everything is silent for as long as I hold the focus button.
4. 0.3- 0.5 sec after I release AF button the sounds repeats - it is somehow shorter.

I have this lens, got it the end of December and mine does not make any noises similar to that. I would call them back and explain that the issue still exist and that they need to mail you a pre-paid label as you should not be responsible for sending it back a second time. I would also ask them to make a note on your account regarding the packaging and how it was when they received it compared to how it was when you received it. It may be hard but try to be friendly and curtious, people are more likely to go out of their way to help someone who is being nice than someone who is irritated and making demands. Good luck and I hope it gets fixed this time.

I would be equally pissed i must admit...you sent it to Canon and they sent it back wrapped in rug? o_O

a $2500 should not have the number of IS issues it seems to have

Mine has been like that since day 1. It doesn't make the grinding noise often but after listening to your YouTube video, I have definitely heard it make that noise before.

Personally, I don't really care since it takes great photos! I wouldn't even know that something was wrong until this thread.

What Canon service center did you use? I can hear similar sound when IS stops, I wouldn't qualify it as "grinding" though, it's quite faint and sounds normal for IS motor stopping spinning. Does that happen in AF-servo or One Shot?
