I shot my first roller derby the other night. This first bout was a "minor league" team I guess. Two New England area teams played each other, then there was a rated / league game after.

I have little experience shooting sports, but most of it I have done has been outside, with good light, where I can shoot bursts of photos to get "that moment". Here the lighting was bad, so I HAD to use flash, ergo, no burst. Not knowing the sport in the least bit, I had to learn quickly what, and when to shoot. Please let me know what you think!

2. she was nice enough to pose for me after she had just scored and broke from the pack. I was playing with panning / shutter drag at this point, and didn't have time to re-adjust my settings. Still came out pretty good.

Considering the lighting in that venue shown in the last shot, you did a bang up job with these. One thing I've found that helps a lot in that kind of lighting is a 1/4 or 1/2 CTO gel filter on the flash. That way when you do your color correction, the flash color is closer to ambient and you won't get the background looking so warmish when the foreground skin tones are dialed in right.

Anyone who is a fan of the sport should take a look at your website link too. I think you have some even better shots in there. Keep them coming please! Your forum name sound familiar, did you also used to ref?

Thanks for the kind words Bsmortil! Nope, never reffed. This was my first time ever even at a derby, let alone photographing one. 75% of what I shoot is performing arts (concerts, plays, theater, etc).

Also, what is a CTO gel? Going to google that I guess.

The venue lighting looks terrible, but your shot are pretty good indeed.

Another good tip about the gel Bill.
