There is no such thing as a "windows" media card reader. Macs have USB, too.

How do you get your pictures off of your camera? Via a USB cable? If so, your card pops up on the desktop and you can copy files to it. But you should just use EOS Utility, - instructions are linked in the post above. (http://web.canon.jp …rm-e/eos60d/firmware.html (external link))

You are too late I post this in the Canon 60D users a few days ago.

Too late? While I definitely think people should use the search function, sometimes finding something in a thread that has that many pages is difficult. And sometimes issues warrant their own thread.

-> The one thing I'd be worried about on a Mac is drivers.

I know that on Windows there is a driver for pretty much anything, and for most devices there is a basic windows driver that does what you need (note: this says nothing about the quality of the driver)
I know that on Linux you get a large community who writes their own drivers for most hardware.
Macs - I have no idea... although I believe people had issues with something as simple as replacing the HDD with a SSD on the laptops.... -> which are standardized in ALL windows and Linux laptops. (Yes, Sata 2 on the apple thingy, but some software/Bios/firmware issue)

there's not an app for that?

Sometimes Canon posts a separate file with the pdf instructions. Look for it on their website. The following is to the best of my memory, so do review the instructions and be sure. Also, I'm on a PC, not a Mac, but I can't imagine there's a lot of difference.

First check your camera's firmware to be sure it needs to be updated.

If the update is newer and you want to install it, download it to your computer and extract it, which it sounds as if you've already done.

Next you need to do a sumcheck... This is to confirm that the fir file size, after you extracted it, exactly matches the size that's noted on the Canon website. If not, you should redo the download. Don't use a fir file that doesn't match. It might cause a failed update and the camera will then probably need to be sent to Canon Service.

After the suncheck, you just need to load the fir file onto a pre-formatted (in the camera) memory card, however you might do that. The easiest way is with a card reader.

Alternatively, you might be able to do the update from the file in your computer, via Canon Utilities.

You just navigate the menu to the firmware notation and click on it (either in the camera itself or in Canon Utilities, after hooking up the camera to the camera via the cable). You'll be asked if you want to update your firmware, click yes.

During the update set the camera aside, don't turn it off and be very careful not to touch any buttons or dials. You don't want to interrupt the update in progress. That can end up with corrupted firmware and your camera will need to be sent to Canon Service.

Be sure your camera is powered up and the battery isn't low. It takes roughly 5 minutes to update and you have to be sure the camera has enough battery charge for that period of time. If the power drops too low and the camera shuts down, the firmware update will be interrupted and corrupted, again needing Canon Service to correct it.

Mac has built-in drivers for many things including USB card readers. It's plug and play for most things!

You can use the EOS utility. The instructions are in the pdf that came with the update.

Thanks, I'll try to give it a shot.

I thought the latest version was 1.0.9?

easy way to do it on a max is download the dmg file, open it and copy and paste the fir file to the sd card, then insert the card, go to the menu, look for the firmware, hit ok, and it will start the firmware update program and will ask if you want to do the upgrade.

I can't copy and paste the fir file to the sd card because I don't have a card reader. :(
