Problem with that would be that they would only be water proof up to that first cut out.

you will have to come up with some type of a flap above the hole :)
gotta be creative when you are doing custom stuff

Aluminum does not rust, however, it does corrode.

The legs do come apart on the 055's with minimal hand tools and a few minutes of your time. Rinse everything well with fresh water and finish off with compressed air(if available), otherwise, just dry it off with a towel and let it finish air drying.

The biggest thing is to not let it sit with dried salt on it for long periods of time. A day or so is fine but make sure you don't pack it away for weeks or longer and forget to wash it off.

I wouldn't bother with those gimmicky(IMO) plastic bags on the legs. In even mild surf, you're going to get plenty of splash elsewhere...not to mention, if you tear a hole in the bag(very easy to do BTW), it renders them useless.

Just remember to wash it off and it will be fine. (advice coming from a longtime salty sea fisherman\photographer)

JayCee, one thing I would also like to achieve is minimal cleaning needed. Regardless of using bags or not, I will still clean them but if using the bags helps keep the salt water and sand on the legs to a minimum then it will be worth it.

Or you can find commercially available tripod shoes, like theses

Do these slip onto the legs or do you need to remove the rubber feet on the legs first?

The web description says "Snap these all-weather shoes onto your tripod legs and be set for snow, sand or other irregular surfaces. Shoes attach easily and provide the stability needed. "

(I don't own a set myself)

Yes these are very good for sand! I had a set back when I had my Manfrotto setup. But they wont do much good it you want to actually protect the legs from water or mud, etc.

They have a rubber band like piece that wraps around the bottom tripod leg pole above the foot. They held on my tripod pretty darn good.

Ben, I just received the leg protectors. Thank you very much.

One thing I forgot to ask is, what about the ballhead? Would I need to clean it same way as the legs or is it different?

Hopefully you not going to get that that too wet, if you are just wrap it in cling wrap.
I wouldn't recommend washing a ballhead, as you might affect the lubricant.
If your getting that much spray and splash, I'd be more worried about the camera and lens, the t2i is not that weatherproof.

It's really a 'just in case' question. I have no plans on getting the ball head or camera near salt water. But it was maybe if I accidentally splashed water on it when walking or something, i don't know. That's my ocd speaking again.

Here is an example of how I wanted to use the bags Ben sent to me.

Here you see I wanted it long enough to cover the entire leg when collapsed all the way down, as well as covering the bottom two clamps when extended half way. Even when used at it's highest point, I won't need to cover more than 26" of the legs because I don't plan on going in the water deeper than maybe 10". Again, this is not meant to be a water sealed setup or anything. This is just to minimize the amount of water and sand that may come into contact with the legs. It's a very cheap and effective way of reducing the wear and tear on the legs, IMO. I will still rinse the legs after every use at the beach but it helps to know that this way the legs will stay in better shape with the bags on.

There is also the "Drypod Wader" option but that is way more expensive than ben's solution.

Wow, it's a only a tripod for goodness sakes. Even though it's the middle of the night, I'm tempted to wade out into the water and document the gradual destruction of the carbon fiber legs of my tripod. I really don't think it would amount to much. That's just the way I am.

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.
