Wow, it's a only a tripod for goodness sakes. Even though it's the middle of the night, I'm tempted to wade out into the water and document the gradual destruction of the carbon fiber legs of my tripod. I really don't think it would amount to much. That's just the way I am.

The carbon fiber will not be harmed, nor the plastic bits, by the salt water. The metals will be subjected to corrosion of salt water, unless rinsed thoroughly of the salts. The sandy grit would grind away at the surfaces of the carbon fiber legs and the plastic bits like leg locks.

I don't think it's as dramatic as you're making it out to be. Nobody is going to die here or anything, I know that. But is there anything wrong in trying to protect your investments a little more than others? Backpacks and beltpacks come with their own rain covers and other kinds of bags to protect the gear from the elements. I don't see what's wrong in doing the same on a tripod which is not indestructible and will wear down over time with the exposure to the elements. That's the way I am. I guess it comes down to "one man's trash is another man's treasure."

I'm just ribbing you. I have plenty of quirks too. : )

But, if I'm going to count on a collapsible device to hold my camera up in space above sand and water, I'd be hesitant to further complicate its use. There are lots of posts regarding dropped cameras but I haven't yet seen any posts about tripods damaged by corrosion.

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.
