I by no means have a lot of photo stuff. 70-200 Mk 2 is by far the most expensive piece of gear I have. Yesterday for the fun of it I tried to put all photo-gear I own in a spreadsheet and dedicated a column for prices. So I started adding the gear to the spreasheet one by one but when the sum hit $7000 I started getting that not pleasant feeling in the stomach  and stopped. So my all lighting equipment and piles of smaller stuff like polarizing filters, remote triggers, bags, tripods etc. are still not accounted for.

If you do not know how much you own do not try to calculate. There is no much fun in it, trust me. :(

I keep a spreadsheet with all of my gear, prices, and where I bought it. I also keep folders (digital and hardcopy) for each vendor with the receipts. This is primarily for insurance purposes. As far as how much I have invested, let's just say it's well north of $20K and leave it at that; and I only have one camera body.
It is what it is. Some people have more personal resources to throw at this hobby than others, and working pros will have accumulated quite a bit of kit over the years. Meanwhile I've seen other high end shooters who prefer to rent rather than own the gear. Makes sense to me.

As for me I only have a dslr and 2 lens. If I need extra lens, like zoom, for some event I planning to go and take. I always rent it. It's cheaper than to buy something and dun use it often. At least, I know I can save some money towards my year end vacations with my wife.

Should add to list to what was bought and sold at a discount. I could have bought another lens or body with it.

Every time I update my insurance I get a bad feeling in my stomach... For only a hobby, I have close to $10,000 insured... Not counting everything I own in terms of photography (filters, microphone, other misc)...

It is crazy how fast it adds up :(

But photography, unlike many other hobbies... Have excellent resale. I can probably sell all my gear today for very little loss... A few hundred, if that.

My other hobby (drumming) is very different. I have maybe $4,000 or $5000 invested in my drum kit as it stands now... I can probably sell it for half that. Not counting all the "wear" items I go through over the years (drumheads, sticks, etc...) All those costs are out the window. Much like if you were into boating or flying planes, big money just in fuel and upkeep.

Photography is not that bad when you think of it compared to others. Excellent resale, great enjoyment, etc... :)

At least the camera gear does not require food, clean-up, vet bills, show entry fees, transportation costs and trainers fees.

Canon 50D, Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS L, Canon 20-35mm f/2.8L, Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 L IS and Kenko 1.4 TC
