Just a quick question for the Aussie folks - I'm going to be in Melbourne for a few days next week, what's there in the way of interesting things to photograph while I'm there?

thanks in advance...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I believe The Yarra River should be good i've heard it floats upside down :) :) , a bit of interstate humour GO YOU SWANS !!! . No really i've been there a few times myself and a general walk around the city and gardens will give you plenty of good shots. If you had time i would recomend The Great Ocean Road but thats a little bit out. I'm sure that someone from melbourne will tell you more.

melbourne is not really a photgrpahic place. well not for my liking anyway. there are some interesting alleyways and the like in the centre of the CBD - around little collins/ flinders lane but between Queen Street and probably Russell street.

Federation Square is interesting and you have to take the pictures of the clocks at Flinders Street station.

Also the Yarra as mentioned by imele

the best time for the yarra shots is around sunset. you get some good night/lowlight shots.

go up and down Southbank to Crown casino as well.

thats about it for the CBD.

the rest is much further out.

hope you have a good trip.

Best thing about about poor ol' Melbourne is that it has so many forms of transport, especially interstate ones that can get you to Sydney.

And if you planning on the big race season, well last year on Melb Cup Day it poured like a typhoon.

As for fashion label shopping, I went downstairs at the Crown Casino recently - noticed Versace has a stall there. And theres a wonderful cigar shop.

Versace's designs are so 'hollywood'; ie screaming queer. He may have been heading for chic, but the brakes didn't grip and he's gone skidding out of control, thru Casino-Chicville and out the other side, jumping a curb and ending up in a public park after dark if you know what I mean. And the prices!
