S95...RAW vs. JPG

I just purchased a S95 to supplement my 7D gear. I always shot RAW with my 7D then process using CaptureOne 5 but C1 doesn't support RAW from the S95.

My question...are JPG results just as good as going through with processing in RAW? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the in-camera process of the S95 is just as good.

Thanks

I use only RAW with mine - it works great with CS5 noise reduction. I am not sure you can remove so much noise with other apps. I also only use manual with it is great as you can control it via the display

You could always use Canon's DPP for your raw processing. The reason for shooting raw is so -you- can decide what the correct processing should be, not the camera. Once you have a jpg you are much more limited in what you can do with it. But raw files give you much more flexibility and allows you to save photos that might have otherwise been trash. Take a look at this thread to see what can be done with raw files

Id use only RAW with mine, except since its more of a friend/party cam for me, I have to leave it in AUTO mode most of the time and you cant shoot RAW in that mode. One of the biggest advantages with RAW from any camera is the ability to FIX or SAVE shots after the fact. So yea, I think its worth it, as long as you can shoot in a mode in the S95 that allows it.

RAW and Lightroom 3. Not going back to JPG, thanks.

You could put it in "P" mode, which is (for lack of a better term) basically an advance auto mode in which you can shoot RAW.

My S95, I use jpeg when on the "party scene" (ie: bars, birthday parties, bbq's, night out on the town, etc). I only use RAW, when doing more "serious photography".

Yea thats pretty much what Im gonna be doing. If its something Im gonna need to pump out real quick to get the pics off to people like on facebook or via email, I just shoot in jpeg, but if its anything else and I actually care about it (and dont have a real camera with me to shoot it) Ill be shooting in RAW.

I always shoot RAW+JPEG, that way you can use the JPEG for quick sharing. If your software doesn't have S95 RAW capability and you don't want to use DPP for some reason, you could always use CHDK which will give you a Superfine mode for JPEG. hat is a feature I wish Canon would give to the S90 and S95. In Superfine mode your JPEGs will be much much better.

How come chdk can do superfine but the camera cant straight out of the box? Surely if it makes the jpegs so much better they would leave it in?

It's most likely a question of does it matter? In the end, it leads to bigger file sizes, when the fine quality setting is just as nice and not noticeable to the eye. Canon probably thought it best to have more files per memory card.

The only thing that's better about jpegs is that you can transfer and use them right away, no processing. Otherwise, you can do anything with raw that the camera is already doing with jpg.

I'd say part of the decision lies in software. If you have something like lightroom where you can automate the process, then shooting raw isn't so daunting. If you're too lazy to process individually, you can just apply across the board settings to a whole group of photos quite easily, same as the camera does to it's jpgs
