Thankyou Garry! It is a pleasure seeing a bit of your world.
(Life's choices. I used to carry my Pany ZS20 with me. Replaced it with...a Nikon1V1, which I thought would be good to carry everywhere. Resolved to get the wonderful 30-110 lens later. I find this camera too large for a pocket. It is a burden to take out and use.) Regret selling my travel zoom. Such a capable little camera-type. You use yours so well!

Garry,
Not only have you sold me on a Sx220 but I'm headed to London the first chance I get.I live in a po-dunk town in New Mexico. It's dusty dirty, and boring here. The most culture we have here is the county fair coming to town. I am so outta here. Your photos were outstanding. The composition, theme, exposure, color are truly amazing and you did it all with a small compact. Every photo was better than the one before. There are a lot of excellent photographers on this site and you are most definitely one of them. Thanks for taking the time to share your lovely photos and your knowledge. It is very much appreciated.

Thanks, Dave. It's a shame we have to compromise. On the one hand, it would be nice to have a pocket-sized compact with the features of a top-end DSLR, while on the other hand we can challenge ourselves by getting the best we can from what we can afford. I used to think my best photos were from my small, inexpensive Nikon D5100 but when I go out with the D5100, my SX220 compact, and my Galaxy S2 phone, my best ones are often the phone shots and I don't do so well with the DSLR!

Woah, hold on! Thanks for your very kind comments but I have to point out that all of my SX220 photos are processed in Lightroom and lately I've also been using Perfect Effects 4. This is why they look the way they do.

JPEGs straight out of the SX220 look pale and washed-out, as they would from any compact camera with a cheap sensor. Even with the My Colors settings jacked up to full saturation and contrast, they still need work on them just to get them to look the way I remember the scene through my own eyes. It's not just a problem with the SX220, or even with all compact cameras. My Nikon D5100 is the same. The camera in my Galaxy S2 phone is better in this regard as the built-in software compensates for the sensor by increasing saturation and contrast.

Another thing to be aware of with the SX200 is that it tends to handle noise reduction and sharpening aggressively. If you view a JPEG straight out of camera and zoomed right in, you'll often see what looks like small 'holes' in the image. The aggressive noise reduction smears the detail and the sharpening locks onto the smeared artifacts and tends to over-sharpen them. It's not really a problem as most people won't be viewing your photos at 100%.

But it's a good idea to bear in mind that the majority of the photos you're seeing in this thread have been processed. Have a look at the ones I posted at the start of this thread to see photos that are straight out of the camera or minimally processed. You'll get a better idea of whether it's the camera for you.

I should add that I'm more than happy with mine. But then I paid a lot of money for Lightroom 4, Elements 10, Perfect Effects 4, and the Topaz suite. But then again, even Picasa is good enough to get better results.

I always have my SX220 with me plus my Galaxy S2 phone and I always see thing to photograph even if I don't set out to find them. But on days when I go specifically looking for photos, I take my Nikon D5100 DSLR.
