Two more of my favourite shots with this camera, two totally different subjects:

Thanks, Dave. I just wish others would join in and show us their photos. I'm guessing that this camera is nowhere near as popular with POTNers as some of the other cameras.

I don't have one yet. My Pany ZS3 is hanging on.

The comparison at dpreview rates:
1. Canon 230 hs
2. Nikon S9100
3. Sony 9 whatever

I tried the Nikon and rejected it. Sony has more features, but reduced image quality from the review.

I want a Canon!

'Tis a thought - I just got an SX230 (uses same battery as my SD990 and I am a firm believer in geotagging) as my daily carry camera. Not much done with it as yet, but I'll give that a whirl next time I see something overhead and in range. I suspect the SD990 will be traveling with my DSLRs though, since I use an external GPS then.

How well has the battery life been on this camera? Some of the reviews I've read have mentioned that the GPS logging feature drains the battery even while the camera is off.

The GPS will drain the battery only if you set it to log your track while the camera is off. It acquires a fix in a minute or less, maybe 2 minutes indoors, so the only reason I'd set it to logging all the time is if it were my only camera while I was out photographing. In fact, the default is to not log (or even use the GPS). It's still showing "Full" something over a week (of little picture taking) after I put the current battery in, with GPS constellation refreshes a couple of times a day over that time. But track with the GPS (same as using your cell phone's GPS to create a log file) and you'll eat the battery pretty fast. That's one reason why I travel with a separate GPS for serious photo activities.

I said I'd try and remember to get a landscape shot with my SX220. I haven't been anywhere that I can get a shot with any real distance in it, but here's one I took in Landscape mode. You'll see that the camera chose 1/160 sec @ f/5, not the settings I'd use for a landscape shot.

Good setting Garry! What would you change? What was the focus point?

You've framed the gazebo well. I would have used a smaller aperture with my dslr, but suspect that the small sensor camera's depth of field at this aperature is prettty good?

My LX5, I'm ok at f/4 or narrower apertures...

Thanks for posting.

Well, at 5 mm, the SX220/230's hyperfocal distance is only 2.73 ft. At 18 mm (about as far as you'll be able to go and still get f/5), hyperfocal distance is about 35 ft., so everything from 17.5 ft on out will be in focus, so I don't see a problem with f/5. Much smaller and you may start seeing diffraction effects (which is why the minimum apertures on these guys aren't usually smaller than f/8).

Thanks Jon.

Talking about my own photography, not the posters, I find it incredibly important to reduce/stop camera shake.
As my cameras have longer and longer lenses available, I find it more important all the time to prevent shakes from ruining my photos.
I never needed a monopod with film cameras; my longest lens was an 80-200/2.8. I used a tripod a lot.
Now I have a monopod I use, and vibration isolation within my lenses and cameras.

Well, before I read Jon's post I would have gone for f/8 and let the camera set the shutter speed and ISO, then if the ISO was too high I'd adjust it downward and have another go. I was thinking that the camera chose f/5 to really minimize camera shake as I shot this one handheld. The focus point was the upper part of the structure; I locked focus on it and re-framed. By the way, it's a kind of adventure playground, not so much a gazebo.

OK, that all makes sense. When I get out to somewhere where the horizon is a fair bit further away (a real landscape :)) I'll try one in Landscape mode and one in manual with the aperture set to f/8 then I can check for any problems. I don't know when that'll be though; maybe in a couple of weeks.

Dave, tell me about it! The older I get the more the camera shakes. And the arthritis doesn't help much either :D

Hi Garry, well I've blown it this time. I have a brand new nikon s9100 charging. The rep showed me a Samsung nx10 that has me wondering about mirrorless slr.... : )

Hope you like your new toy, Dave. I looked at the s9100 but really wanted full manual modes. I've also thought about mirrorless (or compact systems cameras) because my 40D is getting too heavy to heft around but according to the rep in my camera shop I wouldn't get the same separation between sharp subject and blurred background that I like. So I'm looking at the Nikon 5100 and 3100.
